' In His Own Write ' - John Lennon ( The Beatles ) - autographed / signed first edition. London, Jonathan Cape, 1964. Hardcover. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in blue ballpoint ' To Diz, You're a great TURN, good God, from John Lennon ', with 'Lennon' struck through. Lennon personally gifted and inscribed this book to Dizz Gillespie (not the trumpeter) when he visited Lennon's home, Kenwood, in Weybridge, Surrey. Brian Epstein had met Gillespie at a party in Los Angeles in 1964 during the Beatles second tour of the US and subsequently brought him back to London, where he signed him to NEMS as an aspiring actor and singer. In reality, Gillespie was his surreptitious partner. Epsten's homosexuality was not public knowledge, but an open secret among his inner circle - and something that Lennon occasionally badgered him about. The word ' turn ' in Lennon's inscription seems to be a case of clever wordplay, which could mean either a 'showman' or allude to 'turning a trick'. The relationship between Epstein and Gillespie quickly turned sour, with Gillespie attempting blackmail and becoming unpredictably violent. An incredibly unique piece, with a terrific association within the Beatles inner circle. Provenance: ex-Christie's Dec. 4th 2006 auction. (From that original description: The vendor first met John Lennon and Brian Epstein in 1964 and was given this book by John Lennon when he visited him at his home, Kenwood, in Weybridge, Surrey. Diz was the vendor's nickname') Supplied with a cutting from another auction catalogue, presumed more recent.

Some creasing due to age and fragility, with a large central fold not obscuring any autographs. Starr's autograph has torn through the paper slightly. Measures a total size of; 26cm x 38.5cm. A superb rare full set of Beatles autographs on one iconic image. Provenance: This was signed in late 1964 when a Dutch reporter came to London and interviewed the group. He had previously interviewed the Beatles (minus Ringo) earlier in the year on the 5th June in Holland, on their world tour. in Hillegom for Vara TV. (information supplied by vendor)
The Beatles interest: Yoko Ono - ' Grapefruit ' First Sphere Books edition, London, 1971. Softcover. Signed to the first end paper by John Lennon (in black felt tip) and Yoko Ono (blue felt tip). Signed at the well known booksigning at Selfridges department store in London. The original recipient penned a brief poem to the reverse of the half-title page before sending it to her family in LA ' He is nice, she is too. And they send a smile to you. Hope you enjoy it, Londres, 16/7/71 '. Some fading to the spine, and creasing to the paperback covers. Autographs clear and undedicated. Very rare. Provenance: supplied with a cutting from an unknown auction catalogue, which states 'pre-certified, Roger Epperson - REAL'. (added 29.11.18 12:52) Also comes with some associated photographs from the signing itself, showing both Lennon and Yoko at the event (contemporary re-printings).
