John Mattos (American, b.1956)'France - Compagnie Générale Transatlantique', 1979limited edition print commemorating the launch of 'SS France', for the French Line91.5 x 61cm, framedThis magnificent poster is one of only seven designs featured on limited edition prints that were specially commissioned in 1979 for the refit of the famous ocean liner SS France, when it was sold by French Line to Norwegian Cruise Line, thereby becoming the SS Norway.At the time of her launch by President Charles de Gaulle in 1960, the SS France was the longest and fastest liner ever built. Her length of 316m remained unrivalled until the construction of the 345m RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2005. In its 13-year career, the ship became known as ‘the best French restaurant in the world’, her decks graced by Salvador Dalí, Audrey Hepburn and the Beatles.A specialist paper conservator has delicately treated, repaired and retouched the aged poster, ready for this timeless artwork to be rehung in all of its original glory.Condition report: Foxed and mould spots to the paper -modern plastic glazing and framed.

The Beatles often performed two shows a day just to keep up with demand.
