The present work was a gift from Peter Blake to his friend the painter and illustrator Richard Merkin (1938-2009).They became friends in the 1960’s whilst Blake was designing the cover art for the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Richard Merkin even features in the famous assemblage of 20th Century figures, along with comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy, who are also depicted in the present work.
