A Worcester mug, circa 1754-55Of 'Scratch Cross' type with a gently spreading base and strap handle, enamelled in famille rose style with the 'Tea Ceremony' pattern of a Chinese figure seated before a table adjacent to a gilded stand and a bird on a perch, a figure holding a wand to the left, 11.8cm high, incised line on base below handleFootnotes:ProvenanceJohn Alchin CollectionA number of closely related designs used at Worcester during the early period incorporate Chinese figures and furniture. Many include teawares set out on a low table, and a seated or kneeling lady holding what may be a sprig of tea leaves. This pattern is found on mugs, cider jugs and coffee pots, but curiously in spite of the subject matter, the 'Tea Ceremony' pattern was not used on teawares at Worcester. All versions of the design were executed with remarkable attention to detail. They are found on so-called 'Scratch Cross' wares with a distinct greyish tint to the glaze, presumably done to mirror imported Chinese examples decorated in the same style. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
