Suffragettes – tea set a remarkable tea set almost certainly produced as an anti-Suffragette statement with caricature pieces forming each element which includes teapot cup and saucer milk jug and sugar bowl. Crafted in violet coloured bisque – unglazed but the insides are glazed with green and gilt highlights and decorated with floral motifs and in fine condition. The marks conform to the German manufacturer Schafer & Vater and dates from the early 1900s. The significance of the colouration is that the Suffragettes adopted the colours green (G) white (W) and violet (V) as their secret colours – i.e. Give Women Vote. We had made enquiries concerning this tea set but have not found another example. It is known that German manufacturers did produce caricature pieces which were sold to the British market. Often these were of political figures such as Disraeli and Gladstone whose faces were well known. Representatives of the companies would travel to Britain gift and souvenir shops with prototype examples to elicit orders. he fact that the caricature faces on this set do not particularly conform to the features of the leading suffragettes suggests that this might have been such a prototype piece – the actual images of the Pankhursts et al not being as well known internationally as the political figures. Nevertheless this would appear to be a piece intended to evoke the suffragettes as the Green White and Violet colours were indeed well known as the adopted livery of the movement. A fascinating and possibly unique piece.
