THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YENLobby Card (11" x 14" )Very Fine Columbia, 1933This is considered one of the best cards in the set of eight. The close-up of the two stars makes a rare appearance in auction. The card has a soft crease that runs diagonally through the card from the right edge to about just before Stanwyck's name.In this controversial Pre-Code drama directed by Frank Capra and based on the book by Grace Zaring Stone, superstar Barbara Stanwyck plays Megan Davis, a missionary in China who inadvertently gets caught up in the Chinese Civil War and finds herself at the mercy of General Yen (Nils Asther in yellow-face), a local warlord who soon falls in love with her. The film is also notable as being one of the first to deal with the subject of interracial sexual attraction. This focus contributed to its initial poor box office showing (making it one of Capra's rare commercial failures). In recent years, however, the film has undergone a critical reappraisal, gaining a well-deserved reputation as one of the era's finest and most daring films. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace.
