A RARE LACQUER BOX AND COVER WITH INTERIOR TRAY AND TWO SMALLER BOXES, FOR THE INCENSE MATCHING GAMEJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of rectangular form, bearing a richly gold-sprinkled roiro ground finely decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with mura-nashiji and kirikane to depict a mountain landscape with willows and pines, a bridge over a meandering river with neatly painted waves, and a thick cloud. The interior of rich nashiji with gold fundame edges, the underside also of nashiji and pierced with a circular aperture. The box contains a similarly decorated tray and two small boxes with a similarly gold-sprinkled kinji ground decorated to the covers with circular panels enclosing aster and gardenia flowers, respectively, with nashiji interiors and undersides.SIZE 3.6 x 8.3 x 5.9 cmCondition: Excellent condition with minor wear.Provenance: From an old private collection in the United Kingdom. The cover of the tomobako with an old label to the interior, 'Curios, H. Sato & Co., 58 Motokago-Machi, Nagasaki, Japan'. An old card inscribed with a personal poem dedicated to the previous owner's “dear teacher from Vita” accompanies this lot.With a wood storage box (tomobako).The present set was used for the incense matching game. Like the Way of Tea and flower arrangement, the enjoyment of incense had developed into a complex pastime by the Edo period and had a large following during the seventeenth century. A Royal Albert Country Roses dinner and tea set of +/- 94 pieces. CONDITION REPORT: Overall for this lot the decoration and gilding is strong. There is a tureen with a lid that does not fit properly and a handle broken on one soup dish. Visible wear to the bases of the teapot and tureens and larger plates as you would expect with age.
A Japanese Satsuma tea set, with teapot, cream jug, sugar jug, two teacups and six saucers. Provenance: Captain Robert N Walker (1851-1941) and then by descent to the present owner. Captain Walker was born in Maryport and first visited Japan in 1868 when it was a closed country. It was the start of a lifelong connection with the country. His Company R N Walker & Co lasting four decades in the European settlement in Nagasaki. CONDITION REPORT: The two tea cups in this part tea service do not ring true, they have hairline cracks. There is a hole 1 cm long in the base of the teapot. All items show areas of wear and rubbing to decoration.

Each pot of wrythen design with c-scroll acanthus leaf handle on paw feet, with crescent and crown mark stamped 925, with the matching double-handled tray approx 55 x 36 cms, approx 3250 gms.

*** CATALOGUE AMENDMENT *** These are late 18th century English tea bowls and saucers, not Chinese as originally catalogued. A set of five 18th century porcelain tea bowls and saucers: each hand-decorated with figures in the famille rose palette. Together with a similar period tea bowl decorated with a floral spray and floral springs. (11)Three of the tea bowls from the set, the similar tea bowl and all five of the saucers are in good condition, with no damage. One of those four tea bowls does have a small firing crack beneath the glaze to the rim.Two of the tea bowls from the set have a rim chip and one also has a large hairline and star crack.
4 piece sterling silver 19th century tea set, with Wiltshire military interest.Comprising of a teapot, coffee pot, sugar bowl, and cream jug.Notes: although the set has engraved decoration that matches across all 4 pieces, the set has been built over a period of time, with each piece having a different date letter.All pieces are named to a Pte, later Cpl S.B. Wheaton of the 1st Wiltshire Rifle Volunteers, and would appear to have been awarded as prizes between 1865 and 1873 (probably for marksmanship).It seems likely that all 4 pieces started life as plain pieces, and been later decorated in an identical style in the 1870’s.The teapot is hallmarked for London 1835, with the silversmiths mark for John Tapley.Weight 538.3g The coffee pot is hallmarked for London 1863, with the silversmiths mark for Charles Boyton.Weight 790g.The sugar bowl is hallmarked for London 1837, with the silversmiths mark for John & Henry Lias.Weight 365.3g.The cream jug is hallmarked for London 1871, with the silversmiths mark for Charles Boyton.Both the teapot and coffee pot have ivory insulating rings to the handles.Plus, a cased rifle shooting bronze medal, dated 1886, unnamed, but likely awarded to the same person.Weight 222.9gCombined weight 1916.4g / 61.61 ozt Condition: generally very good.Some normal signs of use, with light contact marks to the body, and some tiny, shallow dents to a couple of the items.Cites reference: MN58QL4U
