A LARGE PAINTING DEPICTING SHOULAO AND AN ATTENDANT, BY GU JIANLONG (1606-1687), DATED 1679 顧見龍(1606-1687)款《長壽仙芝》,1679年China. Ink and watercolors on paper. Depicting Shoulao holding a lingzhi fungus in his right hand, his face with a cheerful expression, dressed in fine robes with a floral hem, a jade pendant in the form of a ruyi cloud tied to his waist, followed by his attendant carrying his master's cane with attached gourd, the attendant also dressed in fine robes embellished with medallions of scrolling clouds, both standing in a rocky landscape below a gnarled pine tree backed by clouds, with rockwork issuing lingzhi in the foreground.Inscriptions: Upper left, inscribed 'The magical fungus of immortality', 'Painted in the autumn of the Year of Ji Wei (corresponding to 1679) in the manner of Tang Ziwei (also known as Tang Yin, 1470-1523)', 'Painted in the Studying Straw Hall of Deep Willow', and signed 'Yun Chen Gu Jianlong'. Two seals, 'Gu Jianlong Yin' and 'Yun Chen'. Provenance: From the collection of James Kedzie Penfield, and thence by descent in the same family. James Kedzie Penfield (1908-2004), after graduating from Stanford, joined a hand-picked team who traveled to China to work for the American Diplomatic Corps during the 1930s and 1940, where, according to his daughter, he spent the best years of his life. During his stay, he established friendships with local artists, including Zhang Daqian, one of the most famous Chinese painters of the 20th century, and was gifted a painting by him as a farewell present, which was sold at Woolley & Wallis on 1 July 2020, lot 15, for GBP 50,000. In 1954, James Penfield became the High Commissioner for Austria and was sent there to re-establish a neutral and democratic country.Condition: The painting with extensive wear, tears, creasing, losses, touch-ups, soiling, and stains, but overall displaying remarkably well despite obvious signs of age. Mounted and stabilized behind a solid wood frame with glass. The deep rounded sides rising from a straight ring foot to a broad everted rim, painted in underglaze blue to the interior with a central roundel enclosing blooming flowers, and a band to the rim with floral sprays. The exterior depicting a continuous scene of cranes amidst a floral arrangement of blooms. A MINIATURE VUNG TAU CARGO BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN VASE, c. 1680China, Kangxi period (1661-1722). The slightly lobed globular body rising from a domed foot to a waisted neck and everted rim, painted at the exterior in vibrant tones of underglaze blue with five cartouches filled with flower blooms borne on leafy stems, such as prunus, peony and chrysanthemum, the neck with thin bamboo stalks painted in delicate strokes above a geometric band on the shoulder.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, the exterior with surface alteration consistent with objects from maritime salvage. Provenance: Estate of an Austrian collector, the collection was assembled in the 1980s - 1990s through purchases at Galerie Zacke and other specialized galleries in Vienna. Vung Tau Cargo label to the underside. Weight: 55 g Dimensions: Height 8.5 cmThe 'Vung Tau Cargo' was discovered in 1989 by a Vietnamese fisherman off the coast of Vietnam. It was salvaged by the Vietnam Salvage Corporation and Sverker Hallstrom, a Swedish diving expert based in Singapore. The salvaged items were later sold at an auction in Amsterdam in 1992. The ship was an Asian trading vessel that contained porcelain dating back to the Kangxi period (1662-1722), indicating a rapid increase in production during that time. The popularity of blue and white porcelain in interior decoration was credited to Daniel Marot, a French designer, particularly in Holland and later in England. Marot's incorporation of porcelain into various room details set a distinctive Dutch style of display for porcelain collections during the 17th century.Galerie Zacke hosted a significant exhibition in 1992, showcasing several items acquired from the Christie's Amsterdam Sale.
A BLUE AND WHITE KANGXI PERIOD PORCELAIN BALUSTER VASE, VUNG TAO CARGOChina, Kangxi period (1662-1721). The baluster shaped vase rising from a splayed foot to a short waisted neck, decorated in underglaze blue with flower blooms borne on leafy stems, the base with an artemisia leaf mark and an old Christies label (see provenance). With a domed cover painted similarly to the vase and surmounted by a bud-shaped finial. Condition: With wear, minor firing irregularities and surface alteration consistent with objects from maritime salvage such as encrustations. The mouth rim with a forked hairline and the cover with a chip to the rim and a glaze flake to the finial. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired at Galerie Zacke in 2006 for 2.303 EUR at the time, copies of an old invoice as well as an old Zacke catalogue page illustrating the piece will be handed to the winning bidder. The base with a collection label reading: Christie´s, VungTao Carg, LOT 604, the underside of the lid with collections numbers: HC90-S.381 and S.381. Weight: 740 g Dimensions: Height 24 cmIn 1989, a Vietnamese fisherman discovered the 'Vung Tao Cargo' on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. The salvaged contents were sold a Christie's Amsterdam in a two-day sale of 1011 lots on 7th and 8th April 1992. There was little to date the wreck except a few coins of the reign of the emperor Kangxi (1662-1722) and an inkstick bearing the cyclical date corresponding to AD 1690. The best evidence lies in fact in the study of the porcelain itself that must have been produced within a decade of AD 1683, the year that ceramic historians regard as the official date of the re-opening of China's kilns at Jingdezhen after the Civil War that had disrupted the industry since the 1630s.

A FAMILLE VERTE 'BUDDHST LION' PORCLEAIN BOTTLE VASE, QINGChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) or slightly later. The compressed globular body rising from a short foot to a long tubular neck and finely decorated with polychrome, bright enamels, depicting three Buddhist lions playing with brocade balls and flowing ribbons, a band of lotus leaves above the foot, and the shoulder with a ruyi border. The neck adorned with a composition of blooming flowers against a golden ground, the top of the neck with an iron-red flower border on turquoise ice-crack ground. The base bearing an apocryphal six-character Kangxi reign mark within underglaze blue circles. Condition: Very good condition with minimal surface wear, and small manufacturing irregularities. Provenance: Estate of Andre Dubreuil (1951-2022). Renowned for his innovative furniture and decorative arts, Andre Dubreuil was a leading designer, whose background as an antiques dealer and painter informs his artworks. Dubreuil established himself as a designer in 1986, with the production of his 'Spine Chair'. Through his extensive world travels, Dubreuil expanded his idiom, absorbing the arts and crafts of the places he visits into his various tables, ceramics, lighting fixtures, and decorative objects.
