A Chinese porcelain blue and white tea bowl and saucer, Kangxi four character mark and of the period (1662-1722), the bowl decorated with alternating vertical panels with landscapes and flowering plants, the saucer with panelled floral decoration, the saucer 5 1/8in. (13cm.) diameter; together with a similar tea bowl and octagonal saucer with four character Qianlong mark (1736-95); two other similar octagonal saucers, with four character Kangxi and Qianlong marks; and a similar tea bowl and circular saucer with four character Kangxi marks but probably 19th century. (8)* Condition: - Kangxi tea bowl & saucer: Tiny rim chip and a few rim frits. Tiny edge chip to saucer.- Qianlong tea bowl & saucer: Bowl with two tiny rim glaze frits. Tiny edge frit to saucer.- Kangxi octagonal saucer: Small firing crack to base. Otherwise good.- Qianlong octagonal saucer: Good with no faults.- Later tea bowl & saucer: Tiny rim frit. Otherwise VG.
A Chinese porcelain blue and white twin handled vase, in the Kangxi style, probably 19th Century, of bottle form with slightly everted rim and twin chilong handles, decorated with flowers amidst all over dense scrolling foliage, the neck with stiff leaves and shou symbols beneath a pendant ruyi border, double concentric circles to base, 10½in. (26.6cm.) high, repaired damage to rim.* Condition: Rim has been broken with several pieces glued back in place (rather haphazardly - would benefit from better restoration). Appears complete, with no losses along the breaks. Small burst glaze bubble to one handle. No other faults.
Two Chinese porcelain blue and white tea bowls and saucers, Kangxi four character marks and probably of the period (1662-1722), the tea bowls and saucers painted with alternate reserves with Long Eliza and flowering plants around a lotus medallion and below a toothed diaper border, the saucers 5in. (12.7cm.) diameter, the bowls 2 7/8in. (7.3cm.) high. (4)* Condition: A few tiny glaze frits to rims of bowls. The saucers are free from faults.
A matched pair of Chinese porcelain blue and white saucers, probably Kangxi period (1662-1722), with single character 'Jade' or 'Beautiful' marks, both painted with a woman and boy playing with a butterfly in a garden, within a diaper and foliate border, the smaller 5in. (12.7cm.) diameter; together with a small 18th century Chinese floral moulded saucer with blue and white floral decoration and gilt clobbering, floral mark to base, 4½in. (11.5cm.) diameter; and a later stencil decorated Chinese saucer. (4)* Condition: - Matched pair dishes: One with feint hairline to centre, small rim chip and several smaller frits to rim. The other with two small frits to rim.- Small saucer: Good with no damage. Some gilt wear. - Stencilled saucer: Very good, no faults.
A Chinese blue and white porcelain saucer dish, Kangxi period (1662-1722), with single character mark to base reading 'Jade' or 'Beautiful', decorated in the Ming style with a central medallion of flowerheads amidst scrolling foliage, below a conforming border to the rim, 6 7/8in. (17.5cm.) diameter, small rim chip.* Condition: Small chip to rim. No other faults or damage.
A SMALL CHINESE BLANC DE CHINE BOTTLE VASE KANGXI 1662-1722 The body with a tall flared neck, encircled by a chilong with a bifurcated tail, all raised on a short circular foot, 12cm. Provenance: a Hong Kong private collection, from the Bindley Collection, sold in these rooms on 15th July 2006, lot 541. Cf. G Lang, The Wrestling Boys: An Exhibition of Chinese and Japanese Ceramics from the 16th to the 18th Century in the collection of Burghley House, p.88, no.227, for a similar vase in Burghley House, Stamford, inventory of 1688. Also see J Ayers, The Koger Collection, no.148. A similar vase was inventoried in the Dresden collection of Augustus the Strong before 1726.

A CHINESE FAMILLE VERTE ROULEAU VASE KANGXI 1662-1722 Painted with a continuous battle scene with equestrian warriors from the Peking opera Kong Cheng Ji, with a band of panels on diaper ground to the shoulder and bamboo sprays to the neck, 45.5cm. Provenance: a Hong Kong private collection, from the Stirling Maxwell Collection, Pollok House, Glasgow, Lyon & Turnbull, 28th June, 2006, lot 92. Cf. Kong Cheng Ji, Ruse of the Empty City is based on chapter 95 of the famous 15th century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Badly outnumbered and besieged by the Wei forces, the strategist Zhuge Liang bluffed his enemy, tricking them into thinking that the walled city he was defending was in fact full of troops.
A RARE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'RED CLIFF' VASE SIX CHARACTER KANGXI MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1662-1722 The square-section tapered body inscribed on two sides with the two 'Odes to the Red Cliff' by the Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo (1037-1096), the other two sides finely painted with scenes illustrating the poet making the trip to the famous site with his friends, the flared neck with sprays of bamboo, the base with a mark in a glazed recess, the neck a replacement, 55cm. Provenance: a Hong Kong private collection, purchased Lyon & Turnbull, 26th September 2007, lot 81. Cf. A number of these 'Red Cliff' vases were produced in the Jingdezhen kilns around the 1690s and painted with images deriving from woodblock prints. A FINE AND RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL WUCAI 'ODE TO THE RED CLIFF' WINE CUP SIX CHARACTER KANGXI MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1662-1722 With a deep conical body and a gently flaring rim, painted on one side with the poet Su Shi with two friends and an attendant in a flat-bottomed boat floating on calm waters towards a tall overhanging cliff-face, the reverse inscribed with a poem by Su Shi (1037-1101) from the Chibi fu ('Ode to the Red Cliff'), and a seal to the reverse, with a circular paper label for John Sparks to the interior, 5.2cm. The poem reads: 'I raised my wine cup and toasted my guests, joining them in chanting the Ode to the bright moon and the song of Sylphs'. The seal reads: 'Elegance'.
