A 19th century Kangxi period Chinese blue and white prunus ginger jar. The jar presenting floral decorations, the jar having a white background with blue hand painted brushstrokes on top. Marked to the base with double blue rings. The lot appears in overall fair conditions with wear commensurate with age, in particular a broken and repaired lid with missing chip to the inside of the lid. It measures approx. 15cm high.

A RARE TIBETAN-STYLE GILT AND BLACK LACQUER EWER AND COVER, DUOMUHU 18TH CENTURY The tall cylindrical body set with a slender spout to one side, with four raised bands and mounts suspending chains to form the handle, decorated in gold lacquer on a black ground with many roundels formed as blossoming branches, the flowers including orchids, chrysanthemums, lotus and prunus, the cover surmounted by a finial shaped as a crouching lion dog, 47.7cm. (2) Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. This form of ewer is known in Chinese as a duomuhu and it is derived from the Tibetan bey lep. Bey lep literally translates as 'container for butter', but these vessels were also used to store milk, wine and milk tea in Lamaist monasteries. The shape is believed to have first appeared in China during the Yuan dynasty and, after little use in the Ming dynasty, was revived under the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) during the Qing dynasty. His interest in Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism led to the resurgence of the duomuhu form, notably in metalwork and porcelain. Cf. A GOOD CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'SCHOLAR' BRUSHPOT, BITONG KANGXI 1662-1722 The cylindrical body painted in inky cobalt-blue with a seated scholar contemplating in a continuous rocky landscape with bamboo and pine shrubs, his attendants preparing tea, all between a narrow chevron and a freestyle dotted borders, 13.8cm. Provenance: from the collection of Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay GCB, KCMG, CVO, PC,1877-1945, and thence by descent. Sir Ronald Lindsay was a British civil servant and diplomat. He was the British Ambassador to Turkey from 1925-26 and to Germany from 1926-28; from 1928-30, he was Permanent Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and from 1930-39 the British Ambassador to the United States of America.

A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'YANG JIA JIANG' BASIN KANGXI 1662-1722 Painted with a central medallion containing warriors and figures carrying banners under a willow tree, the cavetto decorated with cartouches enclosing further soldiers, the reverse embellished with bands of floral sprigs above a panel of ruyi-heads, with a six character Chenghua mark, 32.2cm. Mu Guiying is a legendary heroine from the Yang Jia Jiang (Generals of the Yang Family Legends), a Northern Song Dynasty tale and play. The scene depicts Mu Guiying capturing the young and handsome Yang Zongbao and demanding a marriage proposal. Mu is the cultural symbol of a brave, persevering and loyal woman.

TWO JAPANESE IMARI MUSTARD POTS AND COVERS EDO PERIOD, C.1690-1720 Each with a bulbous body raised on a flared foot and with a side handle, decorated with moulded patterns resembling petals painted in gilt, red, cyan, purple and black enamels, the panels enclosing many flowers, the foot decorated with bands of chevrons and lappets; each cover with a circular aperture and painted with further flowers, 9.7cm and 10cm respectively. (4) Provenance: from an English private collection, London. See J Ayers, O Impey, JVG Mallet, Porcelain for Palaces, The Fashion for Japan in Europe 1650-1750, p.206, no.202, for a comparable mustard pot. The authors explain that in both moulding and colouring these pieces are inspired by, or ancestral to Chinese famille verte wares of the Kangxi period.
