A RARE CHINESE UNDERGLAZE-RED MEIPING 'DRAGON' VASE, the upper ovoid body decorated with a ferocious five-clawed dragon among cloudscrolls with eyes picked out in underglaze blue, above a second dragon among waves, Kangxi, 12.75" high. Provenance: Private collection, Yorkshire. There appears to be no directly comparable example to this vase extant in the literature. It belongs to a group of underglaze-red dragon vases where the distinguishing feature is the dragon's eyes, and sometimes other details, picked out in underglaze blue. For example, a tapering vase of this type was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 8th October 2013, lot 3181. However, there is no exact known example of the present type in meiping form with the same configuration of two dragons and waves. Probably the closest comparison in terms of form is a phoenix meiping, formerly in the Cunliffe Collection, sold most recently at Christie's Hong Kong on 1st June 2011, lot 3925. Although sadly having been used as a lamp base for many years and thus lacking its' foot, the present vase would probably have borne an imperial reign mark. It is an exciting discovery within this group of underglaze copper red wares which reached a high point during the Kangxi period.
