A LARGE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, KANGXI TO YONGZHENG PERIOD 康熙至雍正時期銅鎏金釋迦牟尼像Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 1662-1735. Superbly cast, seated in dhyanasana atop a double-lotus base finely detailed with scrolls to the petals and beaded edges. His right hand is lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and his left held above his lap in dhyana mudra. He is wearing a monastic robe neatly incised with foliate hems over an undergarment secured above the waist. His serene face with heavy-lidded eyes above gently arched brows centered by a raised circular urna, above bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile, flanked by pendulous slitted earlobes. His hair is arranged in tight curls over the high ushnisha topped by a jewel. Note the extremely fine beading to the edges, typical for Imperial Buddhist bronzes from the period.Provenance: Dutch trade. By repute from a private estate in Amsterdam.Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and minor casting irregularities, light surface scratches, and tiny nicks. The central bracket-lobed cartouche decorated in iron-red as well as green, yellow, and blue enamels with a ferocious qilin below a flying phoenix in a fenced garden with plantain leaves and wutong trees, the rim with shaped panels enclosing similarly painted alternating floral sprays and antique treasures, all against a deep powder-blue ground. The base with a lozenge mark within a double circle in underglaze blue.Provenance: Bernheimer Collection, Munich, Germany. Tove and Karl Emil Strømstad, Norway, acquired from the above. The base with two collector’s labels, ‘Strømstad 215’ and ‘Bernheimer Collection L/238B.’ The rim with a collector’s label, ‘227.’ The Bernheimer business was started by Lehmann Bernheimer (1841-1918) in 1864 with a tiny market stall in Munich, Germany, and swiftly grew into the most illustrious antique and interior decoration emporium in the world. Lehmann’s son Otto (1877-1960) took over after his father’s death in 1918. With his two brothers, Max and Ernst, Otto traveled to many European countries in search of fine art. Bernheimer's customers were European aristocrats, financiers, diplomats, and artists. They included the Krupp family and William Randolph Hearst. During the Nazi regime, the Bernheimer family emigrated across the whole world. In 1945, Otto Bernheimer returned to Munich, rebuilt his company and fought for the restitution of the family property. Konrad Bernheimer took over in 1977, aged 26, and has moved the business to Old Master Paintings. The Bernheimer Collection counts among the finest art collections in the world, reflecting the erudite quest of four generations to discover the very best of ancient art.Condition: Very good condition with some firing flaws including kiln grit, burst bubbles, and fritting to the rim. A DOUCAI 'DRAGON' BOWL AND COVER, YONGZHENG MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD 雍正款及年代斗彩龍紋蓋碗Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: This bowl belongs to a group of porcelain wares discussed by Peter Y.K. Lam in ‘Lang Tinji (1663-1715) and the Porcelain of the Late Kangxi Period’, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, volume 68, 2002-2003, page 44-45, which he attributes to the early years of the Yongzheng reign on account of their rather unusual marks.China, 1723-1735. The bowl of conical form with flared sides rising from an elongated straight foot to three notches around the rim, brightly enameled in the doucai palette and enhanced in underglaze-blue around the exterior with a yellow and a green five-clawed dragon chasing flaming pearls, leaping amid multi-colored clouds and flames, above a band of foam-specked swirling waves. The domed cover similarly decorated. The bowl and cover each with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi and of the period. (2)Provenance: From the collection of George Hathaway Taber, Jr., and thence by descent in the same family. George Hathaway Taber, Jr. (1859-1940) was a prolific collector of Chinese ceramics and jades with a discerning eye. He was the son of Captain George H. Taber (1808-1901), who rose from a humble background to serve as the President of the Fairhaven Bank. The younger Taber made his mark as a board member of the Gulf Oil Company. He built up an extraordinary collection of Chinese porcelain, which was loaned and partially gifted to a number of museums, including the Philbrook Museum, to form the core of their Chinese collection. Upon his death in 1940, the collection was split up between his descendants, and part of it was sold at Park Bernet Galleries, New York, 7-8 March 1946.Condition: Overall good condition, commensurate with age. Minor frits to rims, some with microscopic touch-ups. The bowl with a single hairline. The cover with a minuscule chip (approx. 3 x 5 mm) and an associated fill. Some wear, as expected. Each delicately potted, of rectangular section, the bulbous body with a curved spout and a tall U-shaped handle over the domed cover surmounted by a knop finial. Each finely decorated in well graduated shades of cobalt blue to the body with foliate-shaped panels enclosing floral sprays and rockwork, surrounded by floral scroll, the rim and cover with scroll bands, the spout and handle with swirling clouds. (2)Provenance: From the collection of Frances L. Dickson, and thence by decent within the family. One teapot with an old collector’s label, ‘John S. Lindisay’, the other with two old collector’s labels, ‘John S. Lindisay’ and ‘25I2’, to the base. Frances Louisa Dickson (1876-1967, née Maunsell) was an avid collector of both European and Chinese porcelain. She lived with her husband, Colonel William Dickson, and their four daughters at Kildimo House, county Limerick, Ireland, and in Bournemouth, England, in 1910. While little is known about her life, Frances Dickson’s substantial contribution to The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, has been noted for a great variety of porcelain figures and vessels from various ancient periods.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including dark spots and some minor surface level scratches. A BLUE AND WHITE ‘OFFICIAL SCENE’ JAR AND COVER, CHINA, 19th CENTURY 十九世紀青花人物場景將軍罐 Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價The baluster body supported on a short foot and rising to a gently tapered neck, surmounted by a domed cover with a broad rim and topped by a bud finial. Finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with a continuous scene of figures in a formal setting surrounded by a walled garden, an official seated at a table flanked by two attendants before an audience of kneeling and standing civil servants, framed by swirling clouds and surrounded by rocks and trees. The base with an underglaze-blue double-circle. Provenance: The Maurice Fry Collection, Illinois, USA. Maurice Fry (1931-2019) was an American entrepreneur and businessman. He discovered Asian art during his time in the US Army, when he served in the Korean War. In 1956, Maurice found his life partner in Elizabeth C. Fry (1934-2022), and together they embarked on a decades-long and captivating journey of collecting. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. The top of the finial with a tiny loss, probably inherent to the manufacture. The rim with a minor hairline. The foot with minor chips, nicks, and hairlines.Weight: 4,798 gDimensions: Height 43 cm The neck is encircled by ribboned auspicious objects and a flaming pearl. The cover is similarly painted with a monk seated on a rock by a cliff, watching smoke rise from a flaming vessel, encircled by a band of sawtooth to the rim. During the Qing dynasty, the depiction of official scenes on Chinese porcelain, as seen in the current lot, served multiple purposes. Primarily, it conveyed the imperial authority of the ruling dynasty. These scenes were to present an image of benevolent governance and reinforcing the perception of a harmonious empire under Qing rule, governed by just and impartial laws. Particularly during the Kangxi period, the portrayal of official scenes legitimized the Manchu-led dynasty and its connection to China's rich cultural heritage. Porcelain wares adorned with such depictions were utilized in diplomatic exchanges to assert the Qing court's power and communicate political messages. Moreover, these scenes served as educational tools and historical records, ensuring the preservation of important events and notable figures from Qing history for the benefit of future generations. Eventually, there was a major revival of these wares in the 19th century, owned in parts to the dwindling power of the Qing empire. The present lot is a fine example from this period.Expert’s note: Judging by the imagery of the formal dress shown on the figures, the present scene depicts a hearing administered over by a third-rank civil servant. These officials would have presided over issues involving nobility, as well as institution-sanctioned events. A copy of the original invoice from Alistair Sampson Antiques Ltd., London, dated 24 February 1997, describing the lot as a pair of lotus-shaped waterpots, dated to the early 19th century, accompanies this lot. Alistair Sampson (1929-2006) was a lawyer, noted antiques dealer, and humorist. After completing military service in the Royal Navy, he practiced law, specialized in criminal and family law, and was appointed a judge’s marshal. By his own account, Sampson was a collector almost all his life, specializing in Leeds creamware. In 1969, he made the long-pondered change to become a dealer, focusing on seventeenth and eighteenth-century English pottery and opened a shop on Brompton Road where he sold antiques from all over the world, ranging from paintings to metalwork to Western and Chinese ceramics. Richard Markell (1932-2021) was the son of chiropractor Maurice J. Markell, who established the family business Markell Shoes focusing on orthopedic footwear and orthotic devices. Richard and his wife Maxine (1935-2019) were avid collectors of Asian art, specializing in Chinese porcelain. Over the years, the couple amassed an extraordinary selection of extremely well-enameled pieces. They bought from some of the best dealers of their generation, and their purchases spanned 250 years of Chinese porcelain production. Their earliest works date from the beginning of the Qing dynasty and generally reflect the Western taste for the famille verte and famille rose wares of the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong reigns. The central dish of six-lobed form enameled in green, yellow, aubergine, black, and white with three fierce sinuous dragons chasing flaming pearls amid wispy flames, the rim with a diapered pattern interrupted by plum blossoms, the exterior with stylized bamboo sprays. The six surrounding fan-shaped dishes with foliate upper rims similarly decorated with a single dragon each. (7)Expert’s note: It is extremely rare to find a complete seven-piece set from the Kangxi period with both the biscuit porcelain and the enamels in such pristine condition.Provenance: Stefanos Lagonico, Alexandria, and thence by descent over several generations in the same family. Each dish with an old printed and handwritten label ‘No. 4603’ to base. Stefanos Lagonico was a member of the wealthy Greek community of Alexandria whose family settled in Egypt in the late 19th century. His collection of important Iznik ceramics was formed after the First World War, comprising mostly plates and jugs from the classic period (post 1570). At least six pieces from this collection were included in the important 1925 Exposition d'Art Musulman in Alexandria. Lagonico eventually left Egypt for Switzerland, just before the rise of nationalism and the abolition of the Capitulations in May 1937. A PEACHBLOOM-GLAZED ‘CHRYSANTHEMUM’ VASE, JUBAN PING, 19TH CENTURY 十九世紀豇豆紅釉菊瓣瓶Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China. Of ovoid form, molded with a band of chrysanthemum petals above the flaring foot, surmounted by a tall trumpet neck, covered to the exterior in a glaze of raspberry suffused with speckles of mushroom and green copper oxide, running thinner on the rim and molded petals, the inner rim partly covered in raspberry thinning into white towards the interior. Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. An important part of this collection was on permanent loan and exhibited over several decades at the Asia-Africa Museum in Geneva. Two labels, ‘4239’ and ‘Asia-Africa Museum Geneve AMA 4239’ to the base. A label ‘4239 AMA’ to the base. A copy of a handwritten entry in the inventory of the collection, describing the present vase, accompanies this lot. (2)The peachbloom glaze has been the focus of scientific research since the mid-20th century. Both the overall soft pinkish red of the glaze, and the areas of clear green which appear to a greater or lesser extent within it owe their hue to copper. Firing in a reducing atmosphere creates the red color, while re-oxidation creates the green. This was therefore a glaze that had to be applied very precisely and fired with great care. Research suggests that a copper-lime pigment was applied between two layers of colorless glaze. The copper-lime pigment was applied by blowing through a bamboo tube with fine silk gauze over the end, to achieve an effect similar to modern spraying techniques. This allowed the thickness of the copper-lime layer to be adjusted so that some areas would be thicker than others. In those thicker areas, there was additional flux, which thinned the upper glaze layer and allowed the copper to re-oxidize and produce clear green. In the other areas, some of the pigment was undissolved making it appear slightly opaque and yet smooth on the surface, while the majority of the copper did dissolve and produced a rich pinkish red and creating one of the most highly esteemed glazes from the Qing imperial kilns. The standing scholar holding a scroll represents Wenchang Wang, the God of Literature. The elderly man riding the mule depicts Zhang Guolao, whose epithet ‘Lao’ added at the end of his name means ‘old’, and who is often shown riding a donkey or mule. The two attendants holding a lotus flower (‘he’) and box (‘he’) are the Hehe Erxian, typically depicted as boys. The true star in this scene, however, is Kui Xing standing in characteristic pose within a cloud emanating from Zhang Guolao’s head, perhaps mentioned by the elderly scholar in conversation to his colleague, thereby revealing the significance and meaning that this brush pot once had for its original owner.China, Qing dynasty or later. Few shallow chips and fritting to the rim.Weight: 2,081 g Dimensions: Diameter 18.9 cm Identified by the writing brush held in his right hand and his iconic 'back-kick' posture, Kui Xing (‘Chief Star’) is a Daoist deity worshipped to obtain academic success. It therefore was auspicious for a scholar to have an item decorated with this figure on his desk, to inspire him in his writing and achievement of examination success.The Chinese character ‘Kui’ is composed of the ideographs for ‘demon’ and ‘ladle’ (or ‘dipper’, as Kui Xing is also associated with the North Star). Kui Xing is often portrayed with a demonic appearance, a hideous face, a horn-like protuberance on his head, and a sinewy body. According to legend, he was once a mortal scholar with outstanding literary skills but was repeatedly failed in the civil service examinations due to his repulsive appearance. Out of frustration and humiliation, Kui Xing threw himself into a river, where he was saved by a mythical beast called ao. He then ascended to the Big Dipper and became the stellar patron of the literati and the God of Literature.Dreaming of Kui Xing the night before the exams was considered an auspicious sign. The candidate who obtained the highest results, known as the First Scholar (zhangyuan), would walk first on a staircase decorated with the ao. Representations of Kui Xing are thus a symbol of literary success and highest achievement at the Imperial examinations. (2)The interest in collecting European clocks at the Chinese court began in the late Ming dynasty when the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), in an effort to reach the capital, presented the Wanli emperor in 1601 with a watch, and a chiming clock that sounded the half- and quarter-hours. Ricci used this clock as a means of gaining access to the highest reaches of Chinese society.Mechanical clocks were among the most prized tributary gifts given to Chinese courtiers and ultimately to emperors of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The interest in Western clocks reached its peak under the rule of Kangxi who was fascinated with Western science, technology, and elaborate clockwork. Jesuit missionaries like Matteo Rippa (1682-1746) were impressed with the vastness of Kangxi’s collection, which reached more than 4,000 clocks.The notoriety of clocks as foreign tribute slowly declined after the establishment of the first imperial clockmaking factory in 1732 by the Yongzheng emperor. There is a notable absence of clocks as tribute in the monumental painting ‘Ten Thousand Nations Coming to Pay Tribute’, created during the Qianlong’s reign in 1761. The emperor Qianlong, however, continued to amass what came to be the largest collection of watches and clocks during his reign; he commissioned many of these clocks from the imperial palace workshops in Guangzhou. The fingers of the Buddha’s hand accumulate elegantly at the top of the pot. The gnarled and splitting branch handle has a sprig with two leaves sprouting forth and is stamped with a potter’s seal. The base is inscribed with the cyclical date, and the base of the handle with an partially illegible signature.Inscriptions: To the base, dated ‘From the 18th year of the Republic period’ (corresponding to 1929). Howard suggests that vessels of this form may well have been purchased for display as curiosities rather than for use once they arrived in Europe.The finger citron is also known as 'Buddha's hand' because of the long tendrils that look like fingers. Although inedible, the fruit has a strong citrus fragrance which is often used for scenting rooms, and for offering at the Buddhist altar. Marchant & Son by D. S. Freedman, "Qing Mark and Period Monochrome and Two-coloured Wares", Arts of Asia, May-June 1992, p. 147, related examples of similar form are referred to as “lotus pod bulb pots,” an understandable but quite unique description. The author further explains that blue and white designs may fall under the category of monochromes as they feature a one-color design on a white ground. These differing taxonomies from the 1992 article to today are quite notable, leaving ample room for undiscovered pieces that may still be hidden in private and public collections.China, 1736-1795. Superbly potted, the compressed pear-shaped body supported on a short foot and rising to a waisted neck surmounted by a slightly domed top in the form of a lotus pod pierced with three circular apertures. The exterior is exquisitely decorated in shades of cobalt blue with lotus blossoms and auspicious blooms borne on leafy scrolling vines, above a lappet band encircling the foot and below a band of floral sprays below the top, which is similarly decorated with lotus scroll, all framed by neatly applied double-line borders.The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period. Condition: Superb condition with only minor wear and minimal firing irregularities, the interior with some traces of use.Weight: 252.9 g Dimensions: Diameter 8.4 cm, Height 6.5 cmVessels of this form, variously described as ‘flower holders’ or ‘incense holders’, have been recorded from both the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. The shape was likely inspired by a type of jarlet, made in bronze and pottery, which was popular during the Tang dynasty (see a sancai-glazed pottery jar from the Erwin Harris collection at Christie’s New York, 16 March 2017, lot 877). The Qing potters took this design to new heights with variations in glazes from simple, crackled monochromes to brilliant turquoise examples with slip-molded decoration. While the size of the Qing form tended to remain small, usually under 9 cm, this should not allow them to be overshadowed by larger porcelain works of the period. The compact size would have allowed for easier handling and transport, making them suitable for personal devotion, private altars, and carrying during travel, creating a sense of intimacy and personal connection when using incense to cultivate a relationship with the divine realm. Exquisitely painted in delicate tones of violet-blue, coral, and emerald green on a black ground, depicting an Oriental magpie perched on a flowering prunus tree, surrounded by peony blossoms, and with small butterflies fluttering about the composition.Provenance: From a private collection in Paris, France, Rue des Petites Écuries. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and firing irregularities, rubbing to enamels, traces of use to the interior.Weight: 736.5 gDimensions: Diameter 10.4 cm, Height 12.8 cm Expert’s note:The present lot was certainly not created for export, as the concept of the Bitong was not common in the west during the later 19th century. It is one of the interesting study examples, where it is rather difficult to say if it was made during the Kangxi reign or later in the Qing period. Either way, the quality of the artwork is superb, and the enameling palette corresponds to the patterns described by Sullivan (see literature comparison below).The 19th century witnessed a ‘Famille Noire frenzy’ prompted by a surge of interest amongst the newly minted millionaires in England and America who vied with one another to acquire the best art to fill the enormous rooms of their grand estates. Famille Noire wares comprised many of the most expensive porcelains sold at the time, with some examples selling for tens of thousands of pounds. Clients and dealers, from John D. Rockefeller to J.P. Morgan, competed vigorously for fine examples, the intensity resulting in ruptured friendships and even legal battles.The issue of supply became paramount. Two elements facilitated the production in China in the 19th century. The first resulted from the political and social turmoil that defined China in the last years of the Qing dynasty. Commissions were disappearing for the potters of Jingdezhen and they certainly would have welcomed requests for Kangxi-style wares, including large-scale Famille Noire pieces. Secondly, black was the natal color of Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908), and it is reputed that the palace eunuchs added black grounds to some wares to please her (see Gerald Reihinger, Economics of Taste, volume 2, London, 1970, page 212).Both genuine Kangxi pieces, with bodies scraped and re-enameled, and entirely new wares were sold to the West as Kangxi period during that time, an attribution that was not seriously questioned until 1974 with John Alexander Pope’s catalog of the Frick Collections porcelains. Pope put forth a convincing argument about the Famille Noire wares, observing that most large-scale objects in the collection were late 19th century (see John Alexander Pope, The Frick Collection: An Illustrated Catalogue. Volume 7, Porcelains, Oriental and French, Washington, 1974, pp. 87-90).The pairing of prunus with magpie in Chinese culture sounds similar to the phrase ‘mei xi que’, which can be interpreted as ‘may happiness and joy arrive’. This association is often used in artistic imagery to symbolize the welcoming of spring and the renewal of the landscape. Tradition also holds that if a magpie lands near your house, it is a sign of good luck and positive opportunities approaching.Literature comparison: For a description of Kangxi-period famille noire wares that match the current lot, see Michael Sullivan, The Arts of China, 1977, p. 248. Sullivan discusses the “violet-blue” and “jewel-like green” hues of the Kangxi period famille noire enamels, and further talks about how the “black background” should be “almost iridescent” like “being washed over with a transparent green glaze”.
