A large Chinese blue and white “dragon” dish, Qing Dynasty Kangxi period (1662-1722), heavily potted and decorated in reserve two scaly dragons in pursuit of the pearl of wisdom amidst clouds above a cobalt blue ground with wave patterns, the base painted with a symbolic mark inside a double circle, further encircled by a channel foot ring; diameter 34.6cmProvenance: an East Anglian based collector清康熙 青花二龍戲珠大盤Note: according to Teresa Canepa and Katharine Butler's 'Leaping the Dragon Gate' (2021)-p.374, the channel foot ring is a prominent feature in many early Kangxi pieces (fig.III.4.2. - III.4.5.). This feature is mainly found in deep dishes of a large size with a wide grove flanked by an outer ridge slightly thicker than the inner one. Nevertheless, the channel foot ring feature has gradually disappeared by the late Kangxi reign. Overall in good condition, two hairlines on the rim ca. 5cm and 1cm each, with a few further chips and flakes largest measuring approx. 2x1cm.整體狀態較好,口沿有兩條沖線5cm和1cm,另有幾處磕碰最大一處約2x1cm

Sent to South Africa in 1899 he was in action throughout the Boer War, for which he received the DSO in 1901. After a short retirement from the army in 1904, he re-joined in 1914 and was frequently employed as a Deputy Judge-Advocate during the Great War. An active collector of Chinese ceramics, Dingwall was one of the founding members of the Oriental Ceramic Society which formed in 1921. He belonged to the National Art Collections Fund and was the single largest donor to the Victoria and Albert Museum between 1910 and 1937, leaving a further bequest in 1948, and donating four items to the British Museum. A large pair of Chinese Famille Verte coral-ground dishes, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722), each with leaf-shaped panels of ladies on terraces alternating with precious vessels, with central panel of birds amongst branches, each with underglaze blue flower marks within double circles to the bases, 36.5cm wide (2)Provenance: From the collection of Reginald Howard Reed Palmer (1898 - 1970) (RHRP collection), and thence by descent to the present owners.
