Condition: Early stapled repair. The charger supplied with a handwritten letter from the vendor which reads, in part; 'This charger is from the collection of Augustus The Strong (1670-1733). He was the elector of saxony and the king of Poland. Augustus the strong appears to have started collecting porcelain around 1715. He turned one of his palaces into a porcelain Palace in 1717. There he displayed his collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain. In 1721 an inventory of his porcelain collection was made. This lists acquisitions displayed in the palace. At one time there were 24000 pieces in the collection. The porcelain was allocated to different groups and was given a brief description and measurement. The numbering was incised and painted on the base of the vessel. In order to distinguish the various groups a ' signo ' or symbol was used after the item number.... (this) plate nears the notation N:327 VW. I have been in contact with Cora Wurmell who curated the existing collection of Augustus The Strong at a museum in Dresden. She has confirmed this plate was part of the original Royal Porcelain collection of Augustus. The plate can be found in the original inventory book from 1721.... the description from the inventory lists the plate as N:327 ' fourteen round shallow dishes with brown rim, 2in deep, 17in diameter.' The dishes were measured in ' Dutch Inches ' which are some 8% smaller than imperial inches and this translates to this plate exactly. Another inventory was undertaken in 1779 long after the death of Augustus. This plate also appears in that inventory. Many pieces from the collection were sold in the 19th century and sales continued up until 1920. After the Second World War a large part of the collection was taken to the Soviet Union as war spoils but were returned in 1958.. '

These wares were imported to the Netherlands for a short period during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, 1662 – 1722. Milk and Blood was the forerunner of Chinese Imari which was created with the addition of underglaze-blue, a design adopted from the Japanese. Not only did Milk and Blood describe the colour of the porcelain, but also related to a Dutch and low-German idiom that describes a radiant and healthy-looking face as “a face like milk and blood”, echoing the bold appearance of the porcelain.
