Apple-shaped waterpots belong to a group of vessels for the scholar's table known as Ba da ma, 'Eight Great Numbers', which were made during the Kangxi reign. This group was previously thought to comprise a total of eight differing shapes. John Ayers identified a possible ninth form, however, by pointing out the existence of two slightly different globular water pots. The first is the pingguo zun, 'apple jar' such as the current example; and the other with a raised, low, neck (similar to a stalk) that may be referred to as a shiliu zun, or 'pomegranate jar'. CHINESE ARTIST (LATE 18TH CENTURY)A pair of paintings of Chinese ladies with a petGouache on paper, framed. Each 80cm (31 1/2in) high x 59cm (23 1/4in) wide. (2).Footnotes:中國畫家(十八世紀晚期) 中國女士和寵物肖像畫一對 紙本水粉 有框Provenance: Martyn Gregory, London來源: 倫敦古董商Martyn GregoryPublished, Illustrated and Exhibited: Martyn Gregory, Hong Kong and the China Trade, London, 2014-2015, p.50, no.34展覽著錄: Martyn Gregory,《Hong Kong and the China Trade》,倫敦,2014-2015年,第50頁,編號34These works are remarkable for their close stylistic similarities to Suzhou woodblock prints. The artistic refinement and stylistic uniqueness of Suzhou prints is widely celebrated as a high point in woodblock printing history in China. Produced from the Kangxi through the Qianlong period they encapsulated the influence of the West with single-point perspective and chiaroscuro shadows - elements at the time which would have been seen as completely foreign and exotic. The points of comparison between the two works and Suzhou prints are as follows: First, the perspective and chiaroscuro shadows on the lattice-work shutter. Second, the double trompe-l'oeil effect of the wood with a well-shaded and patterned shawl, all framed within a double spotted bamboo frame. This can be seen in the cabinets in woodblock prints at Milton Hall, described by E.de Bruijn in Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland, 2017, p. 46 ff. Third, the repetition between the two works of almost all compositional elements with very minor differences is something particularly suited to woodblock technology. In this case, one image presents a lady with a small dog and the other a lady with a small cat. Fourth, the patterned details of one lady's dress recall woodblock printing technique. Fifth, the series of parallel strokes used to shade the bird and the petals of the flower. Sixth, the flattened appearance of certain decorative elements such as the flowers and bird.Whilst Suzhou woodblock prints only rarely come to the market a pair of paintings of this type is exceptionally rare.
