A Chinese dish, painted in underglaze blue, wucai enamels and gilt with a kylin beside bamboo, prunus, flowers and rockwork, beneath a flying phoenix, the cavetto with a leaf scroll border, the base with a rare pentafoil medallion containing a phoenix and cloud scrolls, Kangxi 1662-1722, old restoration to the rim, 30.7cm. A Chinese blue and white square tile, thickly potted and painted with small figures and a mountain retreat in an extensive rocky and watery landscape, the borders with panels of flowers and diaper, Kangxi 1662-1722, restored chip to one corner and other faults, 25cm.Cf. A rare pair of teabowls and saucers, Kangxi (1662-1722), each painted with underglaze blue sea-life including jellyfish and crabs, the underside pale celadon and with an hua leaves, rui fungus marks, one saucer with brown rim, frits (4) The pale celadon with incised decoration is very unusual and was probably a special order.

Bouvet (Joachim)Muscovite Empire 1699... translated by Jodocus Crull 2 parts in 1 first edition with blank F4 ink inscription `John Goodwin his book 1745` to verso of final text f. contemporary speckled calf sympathetically rebacked [Wing B3861 & 3862; cf. Cordier 634] 8vo for F. Coggan 1699. ***The very scarce Crull translation of these two letters. Bouvet was one of the first Jesuit missionaries to be sent to China by Louis XIV where he became mathematics tutor to the Emperor Kangxi.
