19th century Chinese blue and white vase and cover, of inverted baluster form, painted with a continuous mountainous landscape scene with buildings and figures, between floral and key borders, the domed cover with compressed button knop, Kangxi four figure character mark beneath, H39cmCondition Report:The cover with a reglued break and various filled chips and finial has a small chip. The base has a large chip to the rim, two of the broken sections are with the vase, but there are still pieces missing. The body has a recluded hairline crack, the glue is visible from the interior and exterior. Wear to base and minor surface wear throughout. (UV Checked)

A Chinese blue and white 'peony' dishQing dynasty, Kangxi period, apocryphal Jiajing six-character markDelicately painted to the centre and within a border to the rim with a meander of leafy scrolling peonies, the exterior with three further peony blooms, the mark within a double circle to base, 20.3cm diameter.清康熙 青花繪牡丹圖紋盤,青花楷書「大明嘉靖年製」款Known as 'the king of flowers' and the flower of 'wealth and honour', the peony (牡丹 mudan) was known in China since the 9th century BC at least, and known to have been grown in the gardens of the Imperial family since the Tang dynasty ( (618-907). One of the flowers of the four seasons, alongside lotus, chrysanthemum and prunus, peony was often exchanged as a gift to represent love and affection, and was an ever popular motif in porcelain decoration.Condition Report: Approx. 6mm v-shaped rim chip and associated long hairline, as well as 7mm wide infilled rim chip with associated shorter hairline.

Purchased in Hong Kong throughout the 1980s and 1990s. 清光緒 白釉荷花式盃《大清光緒年製》款女士藏品。二十世紀八十至九十年代間購置於香港。Vessels such as the present lot are often described as 'nose-drinking cups', as nose drinking was said to be a custom in the South of China, around Yangzhou, during the Northern Song dynasty, as described in Jingdezhen Tao Lu, translated by G. R. Sayer in 1951, entry # 65, page 90.This custom was revived as a brief amusement during the Kangxi period, when lotus leaf-form vessels of the shape of the present lot were produced in susancai or aubergine glaze, and then again during the Guangxu period, when they were more often made in the shape of a flower head and enamelled pink.Condition Report: A short firing crack to the interior and some misfiring to glaze, otherwise generally good.
The lot to include a miniature Chinese tea bowl decorated with cabbage leaves and insects; a blue and white jug with a replacement brass handle; a pair of early 18th century Kangxi blue and white saucers; two Ming provincial saucers; a collection of 1920s Japanese porcelain; an Imari style baluster vase; a famille rose style baluster vase with stylised animal handles, the central panels depicting figural scenes; a Canton style spill vase, the panels depicting figural scenes and birds in foliage; a Chinese hardwood stand with pierced vine decoration to the body; and a ginger jar missing its lid.The tallest vase 25cm high.In generally good condition. The jug with a replacement handle and light chipping. The pair of saucers with small biscuit chips out of the rims. One of the two dishes with craquelure and cracks running from the edges, the other with evidence of repair or re-glazing. The Japanese teaware with mild losses throughout and signs of light chipping, particularly notable on one of the miniature cups. The famille rose vase with notable rubbing to the decoration and some evidence of repainting and repair. The Imari style vase with scuffing to the foot and some abrasions to the body. The spill vase with rubbing to the decoration and light abrasions throughout.
