The late grandmother would buy from auctions in London or the West Country where she was based. The collection was formed in the mid-20th century.With a cropped catalogue label stuck to the base of the interior, reading "[lot] 128 An 18th century Chinese circular china covered jar with gilt kylin knop and painted in underglaze blue with stylised flowers and scrolls 9 1/4" Note: Note: It is rare to find blue and white bowls and covers of this form and in large size, whilst the decoration of Buddhist foo dog, ruyi head and lotus are associated with Buddhism. A pair of large blue and white lidded bowls of similar shape, decorated with qilin and dated to Kangxi period, are in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow, museum no. 38.1104. Another Kangxi example of similar form but slightly smaller in size (23.7cm high) and painted with landscape is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, no. 3568 Xin 新136735. A further comparable example decorated with 'Story of the white hare' was sold at Sotheby's New York, 'Kangxi: The Jie Rui Tang Collection' on 19 March 2019, lot 362.

Four Chinese blue and white porcelain vases and a ginger jar19th centuryof shouldered baluster form, all with four character Kangxi marks, the first with figures in a landscape with two buildings and a bridge, the second with a pair dragons chasing the flaming pearl, the third with prunus, chrysthanemums and birds, the fourth with two figures holding a vase and the last a small ginger jar, (5)Condition: The first has small chips and a more noticeable one, see image. The second has 2 small chips to its rim, one more noticeable than the other. Imperfections and some spotting to the glaze. The third with noticeable wear and chips to half way round its base edge. The fourth with a tiny nick to its rim, tiny chip to base edge. The last, the ginger jar with a tiny nick to its foot.

Two Kangxi plates, each with character mark. Largest diameter 27.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both plates have significant chips to both the rims and the bases. Overall structurally they are intact but with noticeable losses.

A Chinese blue and white baluster lidded vase, of Kangxi style with Dog of Fo finial. Height 34 cm and a similar 19th century lidded jar, Height 38 cm. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The lids or covers to both of these vases have significant chips to the rims. One on the larger vase 1 cm in diameter, 0.5 cm in depth, the other 0.5 cm in diameter. Other smaller chips are also apparent to the larger vase cover. The large vase overall is structurally sound. There are some small areas of wear to both rim and base, no other visible signs of damage. The smaller vase is again structurally sound with signs of wear to the rim and base.

Lot 80

A selection of oriental design ceramics, including bottle vase, cabinet cups, Kangxi style saucers of horse design, dishes etc. (8). (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The covers to both vases have significant areas of damage at least 1 cm long with noticeable repairs. Each vase has rim chips. The smaller baluster spill vase has wear and small chips to the base together with a chip to its rim. Overall structurally sound. Neither of the two side plates ring true and have signs of restoration. Both teacups and saucers also have small losses. NOTE: on the website the photo 80.1 is the underneath character marks of the horse saucers.

Lot 81

Two Chinese blue and white lidded baluster vases, of Kangxi style, 19th century with bird and butterfly amidst foliage decoration, four character mark to base. Height 26 and 28 cm (AF). CONDITION REPORT: The lids to both of these baluster vases have significant chips and damage. These are visible and with poor repairs. Further chips to other parts of the vase rims and bases. Very much in used condition. The vases themselves are structurally sound but these are with condition issues.

Chinese export porcelain hexagonal straight sided vase, decorated with butterflies, Lotus flowers and foliage, all on a black enamel ground. Hand drawn four character Kangxi mark to the base in iron red enamel. Probably late Qing. 28cm high approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Very good with no obvious damage.

19th century Chinese export blue and white baluster vase, with two panels each depicting a lady by a fence in a garden, with stylized rocks in the fore-ground, all on a ground of scrolling foliage and flowers with floral bands to the shoulder and neck above the foot. Four character Kangxi mark to the base, in underglaze blue. 26.5cm high approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) the lid in missing and there appears to be some minor restoration to the top rim. There is a firing fault in the glaze at top left of one of the panel.

Cooke CollectionThe collection was started in the 1920s by Phil’s father – who bought at that time from Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig, the eminent London dealer and first author of a book on armorial wares, from his gallery ‘The Century House’ in Knightsbridge, which closed around 1929. Phil continued collecting, buying much from the collector/dealer Cecil Bullivant, and by the 1960s, his collection had become the largest in the world. My late husband first met him in the late ’50s, and his first volume of Chinese Armorial Porcelain illustrates 220 examples from the Cooke Collection.Angela HowardThanks to Angela Howard of Heirloom & Howard Ltd. for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. The coat is of Chester of Royston and Cockenheath in Hertfordshire, Ermine on a chief sable a griffin passant or. The Chester family came originally from Derbyshire, but the ancestor of this branch came to prominence when Sir Robert Chester was a gentleman of the Privy Chamber to King Henry VIII. Made for Robert Chester, an East India Company director, and also a director and promoter of the South Sea Company. Three similar services were made in the Chinese Imari palette for three SS Co. associates. No cracks or restoration. A tiny nick to the rim, which appears to take glaze rather than body. In generally good condition.

A Chinese porcelain Doucai bowl, Kangxi period (1661-1722), the circular bowl externally decorated with four phoenixes in flight amidst clouds, the interior decorated to the centre with a single phoenix, the underside bearing a six character Chenghua mark (1465 – 1487), 15.5cm wide (small hairline)Condition report; Small stained rim descending hairline approximately 2cm. Small stained pit to the rim. Some stained scratching to the interior. Some further light pitting. No obvious signs of chips or restoration.

A Chinese porcelain famille verte shallow bowl, Kangxi (1662-1722), the circular bowl centrally decorated with fruiting and blossoming branches with birds in flight, the cavetto decorated with eight oval panels enclosing further flora and fauna, the rim similarly decorated with eight further vignettes of chrysanthemum sprays, the underside decorated with two concentric circle marks enclosing a square seal mark, 34.5cm diameter (at fault)Condition report; Extensively cracked and glued, running from the rim through the centre of the bowl (previously rivet repaired). Multiple chips and dirtied nibbles to the rim. Surface scratching, staining and general grubbiness evident.

Associated cover of vase with losses and detached finial.

Chinese 20th century porcelain famille verte charger. Well decorated with famille verte enamels depicting dragons and phoenixes among flowers. With an apocryphal underglaze blue six character Kangxi mark along the underside.Diameter: 12 1/2 in.Condition: There are no major cracks, losses, or restorations when inspected under a direct light and UV light. The colors are bold, bright, and intact. There are six small chips along the top rim. There are numerous fleabite chips along the footrim. General wear to the footrim consistent with age.
