A Qajar underglaze-painted pottery tile panel depicting men in prayer Persia, 19th Centuryof rectangular form with a curved top, comprising twenty-four tiles decorated in polychrome on a white ground, the lower rectangular panel with a hanging mosque lamp and three groups of men in three different stages of prayer with prayer rugs, enclosed within a lobed niche with scrolling foliate design and quatrefoil motifs containing birds to the spandrels, with concentric borders of dots, floral vines, and inscriptions; the upper semi-circular panel with the façade of a domed mosque, bordered with dots, floral vines, and inscriptions; in a mashribiyya wood frame with a painted wood spandrel each tile 15.5 x 15.5 cm.; the frame 142 x 72 cm.Footnotes:ProvenanceFormerly in situ in the summer residence of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster (1879-1953), Isle of Wight, UK. This style of floor tile can be seen in the USS Sulaco hangar bay and in the elevator that Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) used to rescue Newt (Carrie Henn). Different sizes were used across a number of miniature sets and forced perspectives.This collection comprises 10 1:4 scale silver-painted resin tiles and 15 1:12 scale silver-toned plastic tiles with the same crosshatch design. The tiles exhibit pant wear and dust from production use and storage. Two Framed 17th / 18th century Delft tiles, one depicting children at play, the other a shepherd on a bridge. One with delft blue decoration and tiny spider corner motifs. The other in manganese on white, ox-head corner motifs and a shepherd with simplified sheep with boats and rural elements as background in circular border.Both in complete frames though the delft blue example dates to the late 17th century. The manganese example is a 19th century tile. (2)
