Holland (The Netherlands), 18th century CE. This is a square tile in the Delft style, with applied white glaze and decorated with blue metallic oxides. The design on this tile appears to show a hummingbird perched on a branch with small geometric designs around the edges. The hummingbird is an interesting element on the tile; hummingbirds are New World species and the maker of this tile probably would have never seen the animals in person. However, European naturalists were beginning to publish monographs on New World fauna and flora -- the maker of this tile may have seen the hummingbird in Historia Rerum Naturalium Brasiliae by George Marcgrave, published in Amsterdam in 1648, or in Eberhard Werner Happel's Mundus Mirabilis Tripartitus (1689). Size: 5.5" W x 5.5" H (14 cm x 14 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: The tile has had one corner reattached with the break visible, but it does not impact the artwork. There is chipping to the edges, but, again, no impact to the artwork. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111482
Europe, The Low Countries, ca. 1600 to 1700 CE. This is a large ceramic Delftware tile with white and blue glaze; the decoration shows a beardless man pierced with arrows. This is Saint Sebastian, an early Christian martyr who, according to legend, was killed by Romans during the Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is usually depicted as a handsome youth, tied to a tree and pierced with arrows. The depiction on this tile includes fanciful, swirling clouds and a domed church in the background; the tree, plants, and hills all have a delightful abstract quality compared to the relative naturalism of the human figure. Delftware developed in Antwerp and spread north into modern-day Holland; it is characterized by white glaze with blue oxide paint over a type of calcium-rich clay called marl. Size: 1" L x 7.75" W x 12.3" H (2.5 cm x 19.7 cm x 31.2 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Glaze is has surface cracking and there is slight wear to edges, but otherwise in excellent condition. #111523
