A CUERDA SECA AND UNDERGLAZE PAINTED TILE, OTTOMAN LEVANT, SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY fritware, with central ochre split palmette motif on cobalt ground, surrounded by lotus flower motifs in reserved white, 18.2cm square approx.Provenance: Private collection, western England. Acquired Sotheby's London, c.1996.Similar tiles are to be seen on the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, although our example does not have the typical drilled holes for fixing usually seen on tiles from the mosque. A closely related group of four tiles is in the Antaki collection, reputedly from a building in Aleppo, so this may be a rare Syrian example of the cuerda seca technique. The combination of two techniques of decoration on the same tile is another unusual feature.

Sylvia Leuchovius (Swedish, 1915-2003) for Rorstrand, Sweden. Unique and handsomely glazed mid-century modern ceramic plaque or tile depicting a bird, 1959. With a display easel. Inscribed Rorstrand maker's mark, signature, and dated along the verso; painted signature and date along the angled lower right corner.Sylvia Leuchovius was one of Sweden’s foremost ceramic artists in the 20th century. She was influenced by the Nordic design tradition, which emphasizes warm-hearted, humorous, and sometimes subtly ironic aesthetics. After studying at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg, Leuchovius worked at the Rorstrand factory for over 20 years. She became well-known for her designs of figurines, wall plaques, and tableware, often featuring stylistic animal and plant motifs. Her work is represented in the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.Height: 10 1/2 in x width: 14 in x depth: 1 in.Condition: There are no chips, cracks, losses, or restorations. Some wear along the verso including fleabite chips, possibly original to the artistic process.

Ernest A. Batchelder (American, 1875-1957). American Arts and Crafts ceramic pottery tile. Depicting a fantastic landscape with a castle. Impressed marks along the verso.Height: 13 1/2 in x width: 8 1/2 in x depth: 1 in.Condition: There are no major chips, cracks, or losses. A few light spots of soiling thoroughout. Wear along the extreme edges consistent with use.
A fine pair of large Chinese painted pottery ‘Qilin, Sun and Moon’ tiles, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) each cold painted in black, white, green and orange pigments, modelled in high relief with a qilin, 30cm square Condition is very good. As with almost all ancient pottery tiles, there are minor losses/surface chips but no sign of repair. One tile from this pair has been tested by Oxford Authentications, the ONLY testers of ancient pottery accepted by ALL major dealers, auction rooms and museums worldwide, with a result of a date of manufacture of "between 400 and 700 years ago".PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
