A SET OF TEN ANGLO-FRENCH TERRACOTTA FLOOR TILES, each with yellow stag head and star motif within a hexagonal star border and flowers at the canted corners within an outer square border, probably 14th/15th century. A similar tile is illustrated by Maureen Miller in 'Pots and Tiles of the Middle Ages', the catalogue of Sam Fogg's recent selling exhibition in London, 5" square. Comparable tiles may be seen in the country retreat of the Abbots of Citeaux, at the Chateau of Gilly-les-Citeaux, in the room known as "des Cornes", where each decorated example alternates with a plain black tile.
A 19TH CENTURY EBONY AND TORTOISESHELL 'ANTWERP' STYLE CABINET ON STAND, the central door decorated in an architectural manner, with tortoiseshell mouldings and gilt metal mounts, enclosing a fitted interior with short drawers, mirrored section with ivory and ebony tile effect floor and further short drawers, enclosing further hidden drawers, all surrounded by an arrangement of short and long drawers with conforming decoration, the base with moulded and block decorated legs with a wavy stretcher, on bun feet, 66" high x 47" wide.
A Chinese porcelain tile, enamelled with the poet Tao Yuanming (363-427) standing holding a bamboo staff upon which is attached a flowering prunus sprig, at his side two young acolytes carry prunus spray and gourd on staves. Signed and with calligraphic inscription, 42 x 27cm in plain hardwood frame. Condition Report: Seal broken. Some wear to paint, especially on grass and young people's clothing.
A Chinese porcelain tile, richly enamelled in famille rose style with a gathering of numerous figures seated in groups, enjoying numerous pursuits including painters, calligraphers, music and contemplating, set within a garden amidst rocks and trees against a background of mountains, signed with two red seals, 36 x 24cm, plain hardwood frame. Condition Report: Good condition. Still very bright.
