Kenneth and Ann Clark - stoneware models of houses and street settings c.1983, each hand modelled and painted in colours, comprising a domed manor house, two, three and four storey terraced houses, people at tables, street lamps, walls and shrubs, manor house 40cm x 36cmProvenance: Specially commissioned from Kenneth and Ann Clark for a Brighton retailer in 1983. In the 1950s he founded Kenneth Clark Ceramics in London. This company, which relocated to a picturesque setting in Lewes, East Sussex in 1989, operated for more than 50 years. Many of its tiles are now collectors’ items. With his wife, Ann, whom he married in 1954, Kenneth Clark formed a dynamic working duo. Ann created the imagery for the company’s extensive and striking tile designs, while Kenneth Clark, whose work was more abstract, provided the context.In his time Kenneth Clark also served as chairman of the Society of Designer Craftsmen was appointed MBE in 1990 and awarded the Society of Designer Craftsmen’s Centennial.

A set of eight full size architectural tile designs on paper of various saints commisioned for St John Fisher Church, Rochester, Kent and designed by Joseph Ledger ARCA together with four other designs of Kings. The church of St John Fisher at Rochester was built in 1953-54 with the help of a gift of $30,000 from Bishop James Kearney of the Diocese of Rochester, New York. The architect was Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel (1887-1959). Goodhart-Rendel commissioned a ceramic reredos from Joseph Ledger of Carter & Co of Poole. This is one of three tiled reredoses by Ledger for Goodhart-Rendel churches, the other being St Mary the Virgin (Church of England), Isleworth (reredos of 1955) and Our Lady of the Rosary (RC), Westminster (reredos of 1966). For all three, the tiles were hand- painted by Phyllis Butler of Poole Pottery before firing
