A Pair Of Late Nineteenth Century Decorative Figurative Tiles two ceramic tiles, possibly Dutch or Portuguese in origin. Each housed in later wooden frames for wall mounting. The first depicts a man holding a model ship, a young boy at his feet with the sun and sea shown through an arched window to the background. Finished with floral border. The second depicts a mason laying a wall with trowel and pulley system. Painted in naive style, good condition, each tile, 3 x 3 inches approx.
Original Framed Woodcut Pencil Signed By Margaret Pilkington (1891 - 1974) Margaret Pilkington was born into a wealthy family, the Pilkington's of The Pilkington Glass Works and Pilkington Tile Company, in 1913 she went to study at The Slade, where she was taught wood engraving by Lucien Pissarro, in 1914 she went on to The Central School of Art & Design to study wood engraving under Noel Rooke, and was a member of the Society of Wood Engravers, and The Red Rose Guild, she was awarded the OBE in 1956. Presented here is a small woodcut printed in black ink on cream heavy weight card depicting a rocky outcrop. Pencil signed to bottom right 'Margaret Pilkington June 1920'. Housed in plain gilt contemporary frame with internal wide taupe card mount. Approx dimensions, 6 x 3 inches. Excellent condition.
A medieval lead-glazed floor tile from Croyland Abbey, late 14th century, Bawsey Tilery (Norfolk), decorated in low relief with a chequered shield beneath the letter R, probably the arms of the Rokele family, decorated in a slip glaze, mounted in a modern wood frame, the tile 10cm. Cf. Victoria and Albert Museum, Accession No. 1109-1892 for an identical tile formerly in the Edkins Collection.
A marble topped oak wash stand possibly retailed by Liberty & Co, with tile back, red and white veined marble top, the back with Art Nouveau galleon tiles inside blue tile border, above twin door compartment with open doors (missing textile) and applied metal decorative foliate panels, 122cm. high, 76cm. wide (2)
