Three Delft tiles, 19th century, two painted with grasshoppers and the initials WG for the Gresham family, one with a foliate design in the same palette, 13cm. (3) A fragment of an identical tile from the 16th century was recovered from William Gresham`s house in Limpsfield. It is possible that these 19th century Dutch copies were made for a later member of the Gresham family.
A Liverpool delftware tile, c.1765, printed in red by John Sadler with `Shuttlecock and Battledore`, a lady and gentleman playing this early version of badminton while an older lady looks on with a dog seated in her lap, framed, 15cm overall. Cf. Anthony Ray, English Delftware Tiles, fig. 636.
† JOHN PIPER, CH (1903-1992) THEDDLETHORPE ALL SAINTS signed, inscribed with the tile and 23 x 75, ink and watercolour, 57 x 77cm Provenance: Donated by John Piper to the auction held on behalf of the Lincolnshire Old Churches Trust, Henry Spencer & Sons, Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire, 22 October 1976, lot 387 (£480) to the late owner; thence by descent. Exhibited: Harlaxton Manor, John Piper Exhibition, May 8-23 1980, No 38. Literature: Thorold (Henry) ed, Lincolnshire Churches their Past and their Future, Grantham 1976, cover illustration. In his book for the Lincolnshire Old Churches Trust the Rev Henry Thorold (1921-2000) wrote that "I enquired of Mr John Piper whether he had a painting of some Lincolnshire church which we could use as an illustration. With characteristic generosity he replied "I`ll come and spend a night with you, and paint any church you like, and give the picture to the Trust to sell." A splendid Piper in fine condition and not offered for sale since its purchase by the vendor`s family at the 1976 sale
A HOARD OF KANSAS CITY NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD $500 AND $1,000 BONDS, 1894. Comprising 25 $1,000 bonds and 112 $500 bonds, each a finely engraved two page certificate. The $1,000 in green/black, the $500 in brown/black and surmounted with a scenic engraving of a locomotive, each side with printing by International Bank Note Co. N.Y., the second page comprising 30 interest coupons (4 absent each page). Later redemption stamps and perforations, each 10.25 inches x 14.75 inches (26 x 37.5 cm). Together with a book of stock certificates for "General Machinery & Supply" Waterloo, Iowa, circa 1912 and the "Cement Tile Machinery Co." Waterloo, Iowa, circa 1907.

A Victorian carved oak bracket clock. John Smith and Sons, London, late 19th century. The five pillar twin fusee gong striking movement with rise/fall regulation and pendulum holdfast to the backplate, the 6.5 by 5 inch rectangular single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed J. SMITH & SONS, CLERKENWELL, LONDON to centre and with floral engraved infill to lower spandrels and around the STRIKE/SILENT selection dial to the upper margin, the triangular pedimented case with carved tile decoration to upper surfaces and scallop shell centred scroll carved infill to the tympanum, the bevel glazed front door inset with an angled brass fillet and flanked by floral carved canted angles, the sides with pierced rectangular side frets, on repeating acanthus carved moulded skirt base incorporating short bracket feet, 35cm (13.75ins) high. The firm of John Smith and Sons is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 as working in London 1844-81.
A fine French gilt and patinated brass champlevé enamel mounted Gothic Revival mantel clock. The movement by Samuel Marti et Cie, Paris, late 19th century. The eight-day two train gong striking movement with S. Marti et Cie, MEDAILLE DE BRONZE roundel and stamped 3260 CH’LES MT to backplate, the silvered dial with sky blue ground polychrome rosette to centre, Gothic Roman numerals to chapter ring and blued steel cruciform hands within a foliate chased arcaded bezel, the elaborate case with foliate bud finial and coronet collar to the sky and cobalt blue enamelled cupola above pierced arcade buttresses flanking recessed shaped panels to upstand set onto a hipped roof with conforming enamel tile decoration and further finials set on canted pedestals to angles, the front of trefoil-arch outline with dial set into lattice decorated enamel ground with rosettes to lower angles, the apron with applied cast arcade surrounding panels polychrome enamelled with representations of saints with engraved detail to hands and faces, the angles cast with cluster columns complete with foliate capitals, each side with vacant arched tympanum above rectangular panel overlaid with a Gothic ogee arch enclosing a further figural representation, on cavetto moulded base with rounded projecting corners and turned feet, 52cm (20.5ins) high.
