Good long rug by the Kurds of Sa’uj Bulagh, north west Persia, second half 19th century, 8ft.8in. x 3ft.4in. 2.64m. x 1.02m. Very slight even wear overall. The palette and certain design elements, particularly the ‘tuning fork’ or parallel bar floral elements seen in the outer guards and upper part of the main border, are characteristic of Sa’uj Bulagh rugs. See Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan, pl. 48 (and detail) pp. 158-9, for a similar element – although the theory posited by Alberto Levi and quoted by Burns that these may be residual water channels derived from garden carpets seems somewhat far-fetched.
