1926 ALVIS 12/50 TE WIDE 2/3 SEATER BEAUTIFULLY ORIGINAL & HIGHLY DESIRABLE Estimate £15000 - 18000 Registration Number TW 3090 Chassis Number 4363 Engine Number 4717 Engine Capacity 1645 Paint Colour GREEN/BLACK Trim Colour MAROON MOT Expiry Date T.B.A. Introduced in August 1923, the 12/50 was responsible for placing Alvis firmly on the motor manufacturers' map. Relentlessly honed by chief engineer Capt. G.T. Smith Clarke, it went on to become one of the quintessential Vintage sports cars offering quite exceptional roadholding and performance for its class. Briefly discontinued in 1929 when Alvis placed all its eggs in the front-wheel drive basket (FWD FA - 8/15 models), it was hurriedly reintroduced during September 1930 and is widely credited with saving the marque. Built around a super-strong 9ft 4.5in wheelbase platform chassis frame, the 12/50 TE featured all round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, cable-operated drum brakes and high-geared steering box. Powered by a torquey, free-revving 1645cc OHV four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed (right-hand change) crash gearbox most variants were capable of some 75 - 80 mph. Rugged, versatile and brimful of character, the 12/50 enjoys a special place in many enthusiasts’ hearts. Finished in green over black with maroon leather upholstery, this particular example wears 2/3-seater touring coachwork by Cross & Ellis (its wide, three-place front bench being augmented by two extra pews in the dickey). Exhibiting a pleasing patina, 'TW 3090' is thought to have been maintained and repaired as necessary rather than ever having undergone extensive restoration. Entering the current Alvis aficionado ownership in 1994, the 12/50 has since been treated to two 'top-end' engine rebuilds (though, we are informed that the unit's 'bottom-end' would likely benefit from some attention in the next year or so), a replacement 3rd/4th gear selector fork (a known weak point) and the 2002 refurbishment of all four wings. Of Alvis manufacture and therefore not subject to the same fatigue cracks suffered by the Marles equivalent fitted to later cars, its steering box has also been recently overhauled. In the past few years, this sturdy and reliable car has competed in many VSCC rallies, driving tests and Inter-Register events. The most outstanding achievement has been to enter, and finish, Le Jog (the Lands End to John O'Groats Reliability Trial) no less than four times including three outings as part of the Marque winning Team - the Alvis Hares in 1995, 1996 and 1997.PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now comes with MOT until February 2008.
1960 A.J.S. 16M TRIALSEstimate £3000 - 4000 Registration Number YED 227 Frame Number C867 Engine Number 5016M12102 Engine Capacity 350 Paint Colour BLACK MOT Expiry Date RFL Expiry Date AJS and Matchless had been experimenting with a pivoted fork rear suspension system during the war and recognised the benefits that it offered to both road and competition riders. This trials example features a shortened and lightened rear end aiding the manageability of the motorcycle in tight trials sections. It has previously been used competively by John Bridges and Malcolm Hall before entering a private collection. The owner describes it as having an excellent engine and cycle parts and being in good to excellent condition in all other respects following a restoration in the 1990's. Although displaying a registration number it is not accompanied by a log book.
1959 TRIUMPH TIGER T100Estimate £3500 - 4500 Registration Number VSP 836 Frame Number T100023197 Engine Number 023197 Engine Capacity 500 Paint Colour BLACK/SILVER MOT Expiry Date RFL Expiry Date Originally introduced for the 1939 season, the Tiger 100, developed from the Speed Twin and offered as a sporting alternative to that model, quickly earnt a reputation for performance and reliability. Over the ensuing twenty years the model benefited from a continual process of development reflecting improvements in motorcycle design and technology. The rigid frame was joined in the post war period by one equipped with a sprung hub, before both were replaced with a pivoted fork design in 1954. The head and barrel changed to aluminium castings in 1950 and in 1957 gained a twin port head. The pre unit Tiger 100 was eventually replace by a new unit construction machine for the 1960 model season bearing the same name. This black and silver example is described by the vendor as being in very good condition throughout having been restored. Dating form the last year of pre unit construction it is arguably the most attractive version of the model.
1950 A.J.S. 7R RESTORED IN 1991 & UNUSED SINCE Estimate £11000 - 13000 Registration Number UN-REG Frame Number 1423 Engine Number 507R819 Engine Capacity 348 Paint Colour BLACK/GOLD MOT Expiry Date RFL Expiry Date AJS introduced a new chain driven overhead cam single cylinder racing motorcycle for the 1948 season. Named the 7R it became a legend in its own lifetime winning numerous races at all levels including the Manx and Grand Prix, a tradition that it continues today in classic events. The driving force behind the 7R was Jock West, then the AMC sales director who championed the concept of an over the counter 350cc racing machine at boardroom level. The design itself was largely the responsibility of chief designer Philip Walker. The new model benefited from the experience that the works team had gained with the twin cylinder, E90 Porcupine as far as the cycle parts were concerned, using a frame that owed much in general layout to the Porcupine. Teledraulic front forks, conical hubs with a twin leading shoe front brake and a pivoted fork rear end controlled by AMC's early "candlestick" suspension units were employed. A Burman four speed gearbox with close ratios transmitted the power, quoted at 28bhp @ 6800rpm, with a chain primary drive linking the engine to the transmission. For the 1950 season a number of revisions were made to the 7R. Lighter flywheels together with a stiffer crankpin and changes to the main bearings helped the engine to produce and deal with higher revs and a revised valve angle and larger inlet valve improved the engines ability to breathe. The transmission was amended with a new clutch design and lubricated primary drive transmitting the power to 7R50 gearbox. This example appears to be in good condition with regard to the cycle parts and paintwork. It was restored during 1991 and has been unused since; consequently the condition of the engine is unknown. Finished in black and gold it appears to conform to the original specification in all major respects, except for the megaphone which appears to be of an earlier pattern.

*Wilberforce (William, 1759-1833). Letter signed, ‘W. Wilberforce', St. Boniface near Newport, Isle of Wight, 19th March 1832, to Reverend James Pears, a dictated letter stating that ‘A letter dated 12 Mar: from a lady who signs herself A. M. Thornhill, has been sent to me informing me that a young man of the name of Michl. Macarthy (who when I was last at Bath assisted my butler at so much per week) has been taken up on suspicion of a Robbery (the article, a silver fork) and sent to Ilchester Gaol for the trial at the next assizes: and my correspondant desires that I will send any statement which I can properly supply, to be used in his behalf. All I can is that you've behaved very well during the six weeks of his being in my employ', continuing that he has no desire to intervene, ‘And I confess I am much surprised to think that any young man shd. be sent to the County Gaol for such an offence as my correspondant specifies', but being a stranger to her, hoping that Reverend Pears can take the matter further having ascertained the facts and sending best wishes to Mrs Pears and all the family, with postscript asking Pears to apologise to Miss Thorndike for not writing to her, with a further postscript in Wilberforce's holograph which continues on to the folds of the address leaf, reporting the sad death of his daughter [Elizabeth, born 1801], ‘It pleased God however to grant her a much earlier Release than we had anticipated & about 10 days ago she experienced a calm & peaceful departure out of this life. I am sure Mrs P. and you will hear with pleasure ye particulars which I shall be able to state to you and which ye state of my eyes will not permit me just now to detail', and looking forward to seeing him in Bath in the Spring, signed ‘W. Wilberforce', 4 pp. including address leaf with postmark and seal, 4to. Provenance: Archdeacon George Glover. The text of the letter is probably in Mrs Wilberforce's hand. Wilberforce did in fact go to Bath the following Spring, but then moved to London in the summer. On 26th July he was pleased to hear that the Bill for the Abolition of Slavery had passed its third reading in the House of Commons, the culmination of his life's work. The following day his health deteriorated further and he died on 29th July. (1)
