A carved wooden Fiji Island Ceremonial or Cannibal Fork. 19th Century. A barrel form grip carved with panels of zig-zag and line decoration terminating in a disc pommel and with a turned guard (small chip) beneath the four pointed prongs These ceremonial forks, or 'Ai cula ni bokola', are often referred to as 'cannibal forks', suggesting that they were primarily used for cannibalistic rituals. In fact, they were implements reserved for priests and chiefs, who, 'as living representatives of the gods', were prohibited from touching food with their hands. They therefore ate everything with the forks, including the flesh of their tribal enemies at ritual feasts, sometimes unaided and sometimes assisted by attendants. Forks became a way of displaying power and influence, with decorated or elaborate examples denoting higher status. They were considered sacred relics, being passed down from generation to generation and were kept in a spirit house when not is use.
