Russian Imperial silver gilt and cloisonne christening set given as a gift by Czarina Alexandra of Russia, by Ivan Saltikov for Grachev, together with fascinating provenance referred to by the Allen family of Cathcart House Harrogate as 'the family bible', including handwritten letters from Carl Faberge asking for images of Cathcart House to be used in the 1896 Imperial egg.The christening set is presented in a simple oak case with engraved plaque bearing inscription 'Presented to Alix Beatrice Emma Allen by her Godmother Her Imperial Majesty The Czarina of Russia, 21st May 1895.' The set comprises knife, fork, spoon, napkin ring and salt cellar & spoon, decorated in traditional Russian coloured enamels, bearing marks for Grachev and makers mark of Ivan Saltikov, salt spoon bears Grachev mark & makers mark AN. 1895.The scrap book accompanying the lot includes two letters from Carl Faberge dated October 1895 - an excerpt follows - 'His Majesty the Emperor has charged me to make a rich album containing views of all the places where Her Majesty lived in her youth. Would you be kind enough to send me a photo of your house in which the Princess lived in 1894.' It is now known that this refers to the images of Cathcart House used in the 1896 Imperial Rock Crystal Egg in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Also included are - signed photograph of the Czar & Czarina, letters of introduction and thanks from the Czarina's lady in waiting, telegrams from Queen Alexandra to Princess Victoria signed Mother Dear, and many news clippings of the time reporting on the Russian Royal family and the British Royal family links to Cathcart House and the Allen family. The lot is consigned by a direct descendent of the Allen Family. Generally very good condition - the set does not appear to have been used. Knife blade still has lacquer covering to prevent tarnish. Fork - no sign of damage or repair, Large spoon has small amount of red enamel loss to one lozenge shaped panel on the knop. Napkin ring - no sign of damage or repair, Salt Cellar no sign of damage or repair , salt spoon has small amount of green enamel loss to one panel.The box is in good condition for age, silk tabs holding the lid in place when open have disintegrated. Grachev mark printed in silk to lining. Box dimensions 29.5 cms x 6 cms high, 14.4 cms deep.
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Officer's dirkA very fine post 1881 example by Marshall & Son of Edinburgh. Polished steel clipped back blade, each side etched with HRH Princess Louise's crowned cypher and thistle decoration. Boar's head crest of the Argyll family to one side, the Mountain Cat of the Sutherlands to the other. Bog oak carved grip ornamented with silvered studs and surmounted by silvered pommel bearing a foiled citrine. Scabbard of black patent leather with silvered regimental mounts supporting knife and fork both ornamented with a matching foiled citrine. Complete with a black leather and a black leather belt frog. Small amount of age wear GC.
Bow; a mid-18th century blue and white painted plate decorated in the Chinese style, diameter 17cm and attributed to Bow, a mid-18th century two-pronged fork with blue and white porcelain handle (2). CONDITION REPORT Scratching to front of plate, small chip to bottom middle. 2cm hairline crack to reverse. Fork - 2.5cm crack to top of handle, discolouration to handle in places. Graze to handle.

A fine George III silver gilt christening knife and fork with faceted citrine handles, by Eley & Fearn, London, 1816 and 1818 respectively, the fork apparently without maker's mark, both with floral-chased ferrules, the fork further chased down stem with leafage and fruiting vines, both inscribed with "IIR to GY", in original fitted box lined with ivory silk, knife 18.1 cm. long.Good condition, minuscule nick to edge of knife blade, minor scuffing to box
