After the war, he trained at Camberwell School of Art as a graphic designer. He worked in London for Harrison & Sons as a designer of postage stamps and it was during this time that he purchased his first items of cutlery, a Dutch knife and fork travelling set of c.1720. This purchase set off, what can only be described as, an obsession, not only to collect cutlery, but to discover everything there is to know about the subject.For over forty years, he was a well known and popular figure on his stall at the famous Portobello Market. A good Geo V Highland officer’s dirk, fullered blade 12½”, with scalloped back edge, etched with crowned GVR cypher on one side and thistle on the other, in scrolled panels, engraved and gilt studded strapwork ebony hilt, gilt studs with thistle bands, the pommel inset with dark orange citrine, in its leather sheath with gilt mounts bearing applied thistle sprays, companion knife and fork en suite with hilt, brown leather belt loop. VGC, the blade retaining all its original polish, the mounts much original gilt. Plate 7

A collection of items belonging to Sgt Charles Ernest Dencer, Royal Marine Artillery, later PO, comprising Broderick cap with white linen cover (2 spare) and brass grenade cap badge, leather sweatband with “RMA” and broad arrow, in its tin case with name on lid. A rare sergeant’s gilt forage cap badge (1109), pair brass RMA titles, 7 large and 4 small RMA buttons, cloth roll with knife, fork and spoon, stamped “CED” and “RMA” 13945 and E Dencer; 2 identity tags, webbing bayonet frog with stamps, linen shoulder bag, 2 sgts stripes and one gilt, 2 PO crowns, half cloth bound note book “General Information” containing Dencer’s notes and diagrams, 4 photostat pictures of single and group photos. GC Plate 2 Note: Dencer’s WWI trio (RMA), WWII Defence and War medals and RN LS & GC 2nd issue were sold at DNW on 29th March 2000. Sgt Dencer was born 29th August 1896 and enlisted in the Royal Navy 9th February 1914.
