Property of a deceased's estate1953 Velocette 349cc MACRegistration no. 602 XUFFrame no. RS3003Engine no. MAC 17893Odometer reading: 22,771 miles not warrantedMoT expiry date: 18 May 2009•Dating from the first year of sprung-frame MAC production•Believed an older restoration•Requires re-commissioningIn 1933 Veloce Limited augmented its established range of overhead-camshaft models with an overhead-valve 250 - the MOV. The newcomer's power unit was a 'high camshaft' design with enclosed valves, and the compact and sprightly machine featured a four-speed gearbox equipped with the company's new foot-change mechanism. The following year an overhead-valve 350 built along MOV lines appeared. This was the long-stroke MAC, which was subsequently bored out to create the 500cc MSS. Post-war, the trio of overhead-valve Velocettes continued much as before, with rigid frames and - initially - Webb girder forks. The MAC gained an alloy cylinder barrel and 'head for 1951, as well as Velocette's own telescopic front fork in place of the previous Dowty, and was further updated with a swinging-arm frame in 1953. The MAC was last produced in 1960.Dating from the first year of sprung-frame MAC production, this apparently nicely restored example was purchased by the current registered keeper in November 2012, being described by the seller at that time as in beautiful condition, and cosmetically to a very high standard (sales receipt and advertisement on file). The age-related registration was issued in 2007, which is possibly when the machine was restored. The engine turns over but it is not known when '602 XUF' last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Accompanying documentation includes a V5C document, expired MoT (2009), and the aforementioned paperwork. An original service manual and spare parts book are included in the sale.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 50/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1956 AJS 348cc Model 16MSRegistration no. 758 XUPFrame no. A48652 (see text)Engine no. 56/16MS 30084Odometer reading: 109 miles believed since restoration, not warrantedMoT expiry date: 25 May 2010•Present registered keeper since June 2009•Believed older restoration•Requires re-commissioningHonest and workaday, the typical British '350s' of the 1950s were chosen chiefly for their inherent strength, dependability, and economy rather than outright speed. Announced in June 1945, AMC's offerings in this important market sector were the Matchless G3L and AJS Model 16, models identical in all essential respects. The pair shared the same 93mm stroke as their 500cc brethren, coupled to a 69mm bore, and could be distinguished by the different magneto position: forward of the cylinder in the AJS, behind it in the Matchless. Housed in a rigid frame with Teledraulic front fork, the rugged overhead-valve engine drove through a four-speed gearbox. Hairpin valve springs were adopted for 1949 and a swinging-arm frame introduced, the latter initially for export only but available in the UK from 1950, machines so-equipped being suffixed 'S'. Testing one of these stalwarts in 1961, Motor Cycling recorded a modest mean top speed of 76mph but found that when toured at a relaxed pace across country, an excellent 86mpg was achievable. Apparently restored, this AJS 16MS has its frame number stamped in two locations: correctly to the saddle tube and also to the headstock, the latter being a non-factory stamping. It is not known when '758 XUP' last ran or its present mechanical condition. It should be noted that the kickstart mechanism is jammed, but the engine does turn over when the machine is pushed in gear. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Belonging to the present registered keeper since June 2009, this AJS motorcycle is offered with a V5C document and a photocopy 'AJS Practical Guide covering models from 1945'.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 42/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
