A rare WW2 Garand M1 (E) bayonet. The need for a long charging bayonet was obsolete by WW2 and a shorter more practical utility knife was considered to be more practical. A number of WW1 1905 pattern Springfield bayonets were cut down and reissued in a new shorter scabbard. This proved to be very successful and the M1 Garand bayonet was introduced. This bayonet is an M1 (E) experimental initially made by the Rock Island armoury in 1918 and refurbished by the Union Fork & Hoe company circa 1942.
