A Mahogany Bow Fronted Stick Barometer, signed Dodd, Glasgow, circa 1840, concealed mercury tube with a silvered single vernier scale dial signed, thermometer box, turned cistern cover, 99.5cm highCase is faded, pediment with some chips and losses, front of the case with signs of old touch-up repair marks and cracks to the veneers in parts, case with chips in parts, some beading around the thermometer box is loose and the glass is slightly loose, cistern cover is later, base is slightly loose, mercury is visible in the tube.

A 19th century four instrument mercury wheel barometer in a mahogany case with a swans neck pediment, 8” silvered register within a cast brass bezel and convex glass, recording atmospheric air pressure from 28 to 31 inches with weather predictions, brass recording hand and a steel indicating hand, spirit thermometer measuring temperature in degrees Fahrenheit within a round topped long box, circular hygrometer and spirit bubble.
I* A Pocket Compensated Barometer, Thermometer and Compass Compendium, Circa 1868, by Dolland, with 1.75ins engraved and silvered dial, and ribbed drum-form case, the semi-circular mercurial barometer on an ivory register, in original caseCondition reportThe plastic bag test causes the needle to move. There is some light tarnishing to the silvered dial to the outer edge. This barometer retains its original lacquered finish to the case. The upper part of the case is engraved in black letter -"Arthur Cecil". The compass appears to work, the dial moving freely. The mercury barometer is intact. The ivory register has a small crack. The outer case is original. One side of the case below the hinge is stamped A, the other C, for Arthur Cecil.

The silvered dial appears to be in good condition. The gilt brass case appears to be in good condition. It retails most of its original lacquer. Compass - This is working. Again the case retains most of its original lacquer and is, like the barometer, bright. The mercury barometer tube is complete. The original case shows areas of wear. Both hinges are intact.

Hicks, London, with 1.5ins engraved silvered dial, in silver case, 1912, in associated outer caseCondition ReportThornhill - the dial appears to be in good condition as does the mercury thermometer. The barometer partially comes out of its silver outer case but is held in at the upper part. The silver case itself appears to be in good condition. J.Hicks compensated silver-cased barometer - silvered dial with verdigris (?) to right side of Hicks' name. Silver case appears to be in good condition. When the plastic bag test has been used, the needles of both show movement. The Hicks is in a slightly larger associated outer case.
A Compensated Barometer, Thermometer and Compass, Late 19th Century, by Salom & Co, 137 Regent St., London, with 1.75ins diameter engraved silvered dial, and horseshoe-shaped mercury barometer, the back with compass, in brass case, and with an associated outer case, the lower part of which houses a horseshoe-shaped mercury barometer and compass and a pocket compensated barometer, late 19th/early 20th Century, with 1.75ins engraved silvered dial and brass case, with fitted caseCondition ReportSalom & Co- plastic bag test caused needle to move. The rim of the glass to the inner side at approx 10 o'clock with miniscule chip, only discernible when barometer turned at one angle. Silvered dial slightly discoloured. Mercury barometer appears to be intact. Case retains a small amount of original lacquer but otherwise shows tarnish. Compass to back of barometer appears to work. The two lidded case is not original. The underside of the case contains mercury barometer and compass.Both appear to be in good condition, but the bone dial has a crack. The other barometer in this lot - the plastic bag test shows movement to the needle. There is some very slight wear to the lacquered finish to the case which otherwise appears to be in good condition. The back of the case shows some light scratching to the lacquer. This is contained in its original case.
A Compensated Pocket Barometer, Circa 1928, by Nagretti & Zambra, London, No.11262, with 1.875ins diameter engraved silvered dial, the back of the brass drum case engraved and dated 1928, in original case, and an English compensated pocket barometer and thermometer with 1.875ins engraved, silvered dial, and with horseshoe-shaped mercury thermometer, casedCondition ReportNegretti & Zambra - the plastic bag test shows the needle to move. The silvered dial shows some slight discolouration/wear to the outer dial. The lacquered brass case appears to be in good condition and the lacquer remains mostly intact. The back is engraved "Dearest E.B. with love from C.A.M.B Feb.24th 1928". The original outer case is stamped in gilt to the silk interior lid with the makers name and "London", the original outer case has some scattered wear. The hinge is intact and works as does the catch. The front has the stamped gilt initials E.B.. The other barometer in this lot - some discolouration to the silvered dial. The horseshoe shaped mercury barometer is intact. The plastic bag test causes the needle to move. The lacquered brass case shows some wear to lacquer. This comes with its original box which appears to be in reasonably good condition with just some scattered wear. The hinge works as does the catch. The catch button has a small later leather patch attached across it.

A George III Inlaid Mahogany Wheelcase Barometer and Thermometer, by J. Gregory of No. 17 Ryders Court, Leicester Square, in case inlaid with leaves and shells, 39ins highCondition ReportThe instrument is in good overall condition. Externally the woodwork being free from any serious defects, there are some light marks commensurate with age and usage. The glass to the front, the gilding is mostly missing and re-gilding would be recommended. The silvering to the dial is in good condition, although dirty and the glass itself is unmarked and free from cracks and chips. The thermometer itself appears to have the correct amount of mercury and it is showing up the gauge. The silvered dial to the thermometer again is dirty but legible with all the writing clear and concise. The rear is in good condition, largely unmarked. It bears trade label for G Trollop & Sons with the number 205 written in fountain pen. The hinges to the back are in good condition although one screw is missing on the top hinge. Overall an honest example.

Cattaneo of Folkestone, with engraved ivory scale and vernier and alcohol thermometer, contained in plain mahogany case with moulded pediment and moulded edge, and with exposed cistern, 39.5ins highCondition ReportThe mercury tube and alcohol thermometer are in good condition, the glass remaining intact. The lower left corner of the case shows a small area of loss to veneer, the small lower moulding to the lower part of the mercury housing is loose, and the timber beneath this (the left end of which shows the missing veneer) is similarly loose at the left end. There is some light scattered fading to the case but the case appears to retain its original polished surface. The thermometer ivory scale has a small area of cracking in two places to its lower edge. The lower timber moulding is loose.
Herzogin Cecilie interest: a mahogany cased Rototherm thermometer, the case inscribed "Ex Herzogin Cecilie - Wrecked 25th April 1936 - Bolt Head Devon", W 21.5cm x H 8cm x D 4.5cm. Note: Herzogin Cecilie was a 1902 German-built four-mast barque and was one of the fastest merchant sailing ships of her time. On 25 April 1936 the ship grounded on Ham Stone Rock and drifted onto the cliffs of Bolt Head on the South Devon coast. Herzogin Cecilie was later towed to Starhole Bay near Kingsbridge and on 18 January 1939, the ship capsized and sank. The timber and brass portholes from the chart room were salvaged.
A modern O. Comitti & Son mahogany verre églomisé cased wheel barometer in the early 19th century style; the thermometer over a round resister dial and surmounted by a cast-brass fleur-de-lys plume. (Reproduction of the original made for the Prince Regent in the early 19th century by Russell Falkirk. This example was especially commissioned by Garrard & Co and bears a plaque to its back commemorating the 1981 royal wedding (100cm high x 26cm widest)
