A Late Regency mahogany, tulipwood crossbanded and outlined wheel barometer By William Horrod, LondonThe swan neck pediment above a thermometer scale and small convex mirror in ebony slip, the silvered 12 in. dial, with turned brass bezel, engraved to the centre with foliate scrolls, a harp and other musical emblems, above a waisted terminal centred with the signed hydrometer scale114 cm. high. Jacobs & Lucas, a William IV rosewood wheel barometer, circa 1840, retailed by R. Northern, Optician, Hull with 20 - 140 degree thermometer and gilt dial, swan neck pediment, 110 cm. Bethel Jacobs was a watch and clockmaker at 7 Whitefriargate, Hull between 1838-1872. In partnership with Edward Lucas between 1851 until 1862. In August 1862 Edward was commissioned a Lieutenant in the East Yorks Rifle Volunteers and a Captain in the December; the partnership was then dissolved. In the latter part of July 1863 Jacobs erected an electrical time ball in front of his shop for the benefit of sea captains. Richard Northern was listed as a clock and watch maker in Lowgate, Hull in 1791 and then as an Optician and instrument maker in 1903, he was at 46 Lowgate between 1813 - 1834, then 50 Lowgate between 1838 - 1840. His son Edward joined him in 1834 and remained at 50 Lowgate until 1846.

19th century Irish sundial, by Mason, Dublin. An early 19th century brass octagonal sundial, the scrolled gnomon centred on a finely engraved compass rose within a chapter ring with Roman numerals, signed 'Mason, Dublin'. Set on a polished black limestone columnar plinth. 42 by 13in. (106.7 by 33cm) In 1787 Seacome Mason established an optician business at 7 Arran Quay selling 'telescopes, glasses, microscopes, concave and opera glasses, celestial and terrestrial globes of all sizes, electrical machines with apparatus . . . goggles for protecting the eyes from dust or wind, ditto for children with the squint . . .' In the early 19th century the firm branched into scientific instruments, including sundials but most successfully the Mason's Hygrometer, the old name for the Wet & Dry Bulb Thermometer invented by Apjohn, one time professor of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons. The firm still thrives today, rebranded Masons Technology, they sell scientific and diagnostic equipment.

A MAGNIFICENT GENTLEMAN'S TRAVELLING COMPENDIUM BY ASPREY, LONDON, CIRCA 1870 , apparently unused, the black morocco case with gilt tooling and Asprey patent inset spring handle to lid opening to reveal an opulently worked interior with engraved gilt brass fretwork, complete set of accessories including compass, barometer, Sampson Morden drawing set, spring stationery racks with inkwells and vesta with fish-skin strike and bearing London hallmarks for 1871, scissors, ivory ruler, seal, knife, quill cutter and nib cleaner, etc., morocco bound gilt edged books for cash, addresses and journal, the inside lid with writing slopes, calendar, thermometer, postal rates to India, accessory tray lifting to reveal inner compartment, concealed jewellery and sovereign compartments, secret tray, engraved lock plates with Bramah locks and much other fine detail -- 9¬ x 21¬ x 40¬in. An Ormolu Aneroid Barometer, circa 1900, scroll and floral decorated case signed to the edge F.Barbedienne, thermometer tube, aneroid movement, later wooden backboard, 41cm high 29.03.18, Ormolu surfaces are slightly rubbed in parts, replaced thermometer tube, thermometer enamel dial with minor hairline cracks and minor chips to the edges in parts, later wooden backboard, aneroid movement has not been tested for its working condition.
