JohS Solcha, Hull - A Victorian mahogany wheel barometer, the silvered 8" dial with dry/damp dial, thermometer, convex mirror and level dials, the case with boxwood stringing, length 98 cm. The Solca/Solcha's were a family of instrument makers who started with Luigi (Lewis) in circa 1838 and included Joseph, John and David, Joseph and John worked from 13 Humber Dock Street from 1861-1872.
G. Maspoli, Hull - A Victorian mahogany wheel barometer, the silvered 8" dial with dry/damp dial, thermometer, convex mirror and level dials, the case with boxwood stringing, length 98 cm. The Maspoli family of barometer makers include Augustus, 49 Saltshouse Lane (1826-1831), 79 Lowgate (1835-1851), James at 17 Robinson Row (1835-1848), 9 Robinson Row (1851-59) and then with Solcha from 1860
An early 19th Century mahogany and inlaid barometer / thermometer by Giobbio of Trowbridge and Devizes. The neck with alcohol thermometer over a silvered dial, large silvered circular dial over pull and hemispherical cistern cover. Mercury filled complete with transport cork. Measures 114cms high
Of mining interest; A yard stick once belonging to the Grimethorpe Colliery Manager Reuben Athey Roebuck with initial plate "R.A.R.", a John Davis Anemometer in case, used to determine the volume of air entering or exiting mine workings, a John Davis brass cased mining Hygrometer Dry Wet Thermometer, a miner's lamp with copper plate "R Roebuck".
A quantity of small collectables, including; a mid-19th century James Houliston ivory pocket thermometer and compass (a.f), a giltwood carved religious figure (20cm high), a pair of mother of pearl and brass opera glasses, a wooden shabti figure (18cm high), a Victorian book containing pressed flowers, two silhouettes, a Finish bronze plaque and sundry (qty). Provenance; Property from Prudence and the late Marius Goring, CBE.
A gold and enamel mounted pink hardstone table thermometer of column form, raised on a square base, the base applied with two diamond set and enamelled mounts, one detailed 1613-1913, the other with a Royal monogram having a crown surmount, the column thermometer fitted with gold, pale lime green and diamond set fittings, bearing spurious marks for Faberge (composite), height 26.5cm.
