He continued his father's tradition of producing outstanding instruments and became instrument maker to George III and optician to the Prince of Wales. He died in 1795 leaving the business to his younger brother, Dudley.

Late 19th / early 20th century Continental bronze pocket watch holder in the form of an eagle with serpent in his beak, perched on top of a Doric column with thermometer scale, 15cm high, together with another watch holder modelled after the antique with crane and tortoise, raised on marble plinth (2) CONDITION REPORT Eagle and serpent stand in good order, a few small chips around column. Base appears to have been broken around the bottom and restuck as it has a crack running all the way around it. Approximately 14.5cm in heightThermometer has some slight discolouration to silvering around dial, otherwise in good order. 15cm in height
