In 1969 the race was on to build the first automatic chronograph movement. On the 10th January, Zenith and it's partner Movado were able to show a working prototype at a press conference in Geneva. This was ahead of the combined competition of Breitling, Heuer-Leonidas, Hamilton/Büren and Dubois Dépraz, who announced theirs in March. This ground braking movement has been used by other brands, including Rolex who used a modified version in the Daytona.

Rolex, Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master, ref. 1675, a stainless steel bracelet watch, no. 3423339, circa 1973, automatic movement, 26 jewels, cal. 1570, adjusted to 5 positions and temperature, black dial, dot and baton markers, pointed baton minute and Mercedes hour hands, centre seconds hand, date aperture at 3 o'clock, rotating bezel with two tone insert, 24 hour track, screw down crown, screw down case back, on a Rolex Oyster stainless steel bracelet with fold over clasp, case back, dial, movement, crown and clasp signed, accompanied by a Rolex box, diameter 39mm, bracelet 20cm The GMT was originally designed between Pan American Airways and Rolex. Pan Am realised the need for a dual time wrist watch for their pilots after transatlantic travel times were halved. They needed to keep their pilots on 'home' time while being simultaneously aware of local time. This was to counter act the symptoms of jet lag. In 1954 the ref. 6542 was released and this was the first GMT. Shortly after in 1959, an updated version of the GMT was released with the ref. 1675. The 1675 was produced for 21 years until 1980 and was the only GMT produced by Rolex in this period. The Rolex GMT has become one of the most distinguishable dual time zone wrist watches. With its blue and red bezel, these have become known as the Pepsi among collectors.
Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Submariner Comex, Ref. 5513, a stainless steel bracelet watch, no. 2833604, circa 1971, automatic movement, 26 jewels, cal. 1520, black replacement service dial, applied luminous dot and baton markers, luminous pointed baton minute and Mercedes hour hands, centre seconds hand, rotating black bezel with Arabic numeral 10 minute track, helium escape valve, screw down crown, screw down case back, stamped ROLEX COMEX, on a Rolex stainless steel Oyster bracelet with fold over clasp, case back, dial, movement, crown and clasp signed, diameter 39mm, bracelet 17.5cm Coming from the family of the owner, this dive watch was worn by Johny Henry Simpson, who was more commonly known as Jack Simpson. John joined the Royal Navy prior to the 2nd World War, where he was deployed on Arctic Convoy duties. These were some of the most hazardous convoys carried out by both the Merchant and Royal Navy personnel. During his time spent in the service of the Royal Navy, John had learnt to dive. By the time he left the Royal Navy he was fully qualified as a Diver. This allowed him to gain the position as a diver on the Manchester Ship Canal, where he worked on the main dock area at the Manchester end of the canal. Here John became one of the top divers and went on to train many of the assistant divers. One of his pupils joined Comex to work on the North Sea rigs. During this time John was approached with further recommendations for divers to work at Comex, with eventually John being asked himself to dive with Comex on the rigs. John did this for a short while, but eventually had to give up diving due to health issues. Upon retiring from his diving career he was presented with this Rolex Submariner by his initial pupil. This Submariner, the reference 5513, features a helium escape valve at 9 o’clock, a new development for divers working from a diving bell in a helium-rich environment. This is the earliest example of the use of an HEV, a detail that would be used in the Submariner reference 5514 and finally find a home in the Rolex Sea Dweller reference 1665.
Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner, MK VI Single Red Dial, ref. 1680, a stainless steel wrist watch, no. 3427571, circa 1973, automatic movement, 26 jewels, cal. 1570, adjusted to 5 positions and temperature, black dial, dot and baton markers, luminous pointed baton minute and Mercedes hour hands, centre seconds hand, date aperture at 3 o'clock, rotating bezel with black insert, Arabic numeral 10 minute track, screw down crown, screw down case back, on a non original brown strap with stainless steel pin buckle, case back, dial, movement and crown signed, accompanied by a Rolex service pouch and service guarantee card dated 11th October 2012, diameter 39mm The ref. 1680 was introduced in 1969 and was the first Submariner to come with a date function. During the first four years of production, the dials came with red writing on the dial. This makes them highly sought after among collectors. There were seven variations of the dial and this example comes with the Mk VI dial. This dial can be identified by having feet first and closed 6s. It was common for these red dials to be replaced during a service, so it is not known how many are left in circulation.
