Lot 415

A superbly engineered machine, UK-delivered, just 39,000 miles and hugely capable. The letters ‘STI’ hold a special sort of appeal for many Subaru Impreza enthusiasts. Think of ‘Subaru Technica International’ as the go-faster wing of Subaru much as M is to BMW, AMG is to Mercedes or, more accurately, Ralliart is to Mitsubishi. STI-badged Imprezas command serious respect and the officially imported UK cars are always in big demand. It's fair to say that October 2000 was a significant month for Impreza owners. Out went the much-loved original shape car and in came the revised bug-eyed edition. The reception was frosty to say the least, as Subaru realised that the styling wasn't to the taste of hardcore fans and moved quickly with the launch of the Impreza UK300 which offered compound headlamps, bigger spoilers, and the option of a Prodrive WR kit that boosted power to 245bhp. The UK300 was an instant hit and Subaru UK subsequently introduced the Impreza STi at the 2001 Frankfurt show. Debuting in British showrooms in January 2002, the STI, a car that was launched with 261bhp and the option of a standard car or one with bigger Prodrive-designed spoilers, grille, and front bumper. Both were badged 'Type-UK' to differentiate them from parallel imported models. The 2002 Paris Motor Show saw the release of the facelifted Impreza with much of the credit going to Prodrive and the designer of the McLaren F1, Peter Stevens. With revised front wings, shapelier headlights, a more aggressive bumper and front grille, a re-sculpted bonnet and revised rear light clusters, it was a far more cohesive design than its predecessor and sales soon picked up again, especially as its key rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, had just been toned down from its Evo VI heyday. Almost immediately Prodrive announced a performance pack for the STI offering a full 300bhp. A 2003 facelift saw the controversial bug-eye headlamps replaced and a raft of other changes brought in.Introduced at the 2001 Frankfurt Show, the STI is powered by a 265bhp 2.0-litre flat four engine, but don't be fooled into thinking that it's merely a case of plugging in a more aggressive engine management chip or a bucket-sized turbocharger. The later 2003 facelifted car followed the same theme with revised suspension and a few engine tweaks. Nearly 80% of the STI's all-alloy powerplant is unique. The piston head was reshaped to form tougher semi-closed-deck cylinder blocks. Screw-in conrods and forged pistons combine with shimless valve lifters, sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow valve intakes. Every moving part is either stronger, lighter or both. This reduces inertia and gives the engine a manic free-revving feel that's missing from the standard WRX. A larger intercooler and air intake help keep things from meltdown, and a water spray has been fitted to the intercooler that is operated by the driver via a dash-mounted button. Serious stuff.Differences to the regular WRX include special gold-coloured spoked alloy wheels, colour-keyed sill spoilers and an interior featuring blue suede-effect seats with STI logos and red stitching for the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever. Also, inside - and sure to please enthusiasts - is a switch to spray the intercooler with water. Another device allows the driver to pre-set a warning buzzer and light to guard against over-revving the engine. On opening the bonnet, the engine compartment greets owners with a dramatic mixture of colours and detailing. The intake manifold, for example, is painted in red and the enlarged aluminium intercooler emblazoned with STI lettering. In addition, the STI Prodrive Style features a massive high-riding boot spoiler, newly designed sill spoilers and a deeper, squarer front bumper. The grille and badging resemble the WRC rally car. Interior enhancements over the standard STI include dark blue-coloured instruments with red needles. Four colours were available: WR Blue Mica, Blue Black Mica, Premium Silver Metallic and Pure White, the latter two being available to special order only. The car presented here is a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX-STI Type UK which has built on its very sound standard specification and been further enhanced for even more performance and fast driving acumen. The discerning older owner of this special car, a renowned figure in motoring circles, has improved this car with superb engineering carried out by proper specialists. Consequently, the bodywork is in as good condition as the mechanicals. It's accompanied by a large history file, fully detailing the specification, servicing and the recorded mileage of just 39,247. The car is ideal for fast-road driving, hill-climbs or sprint events. Its engineering has been overseen by an owner who has lived and breathed motorsport for decades, selecting the best people and parts to create this car. The car’s abilities are supreme, very useable on road, but comes into its own when sprinting or hill-climbing, a proper machine and offering staggering performance for this level of guide price. SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZA WRX-STI TYPE UKYear: 2003Chassis Number: JF1GDBKH33G035013Registration Number: AM53 HYATransmission: ManualEngine Number: 918121 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 39000 MilesClick here for more details and images

Lot 450

A simply stunning example of the much loved R107, purchased new by our vendor, and displaying only 26,328 miles. The Mercedes-Benz SL range from the 1980s was known as the R107 Series and was undoubtedly the ultimate, California-sunshine, top-down symbol of the era. Various engine options were offered but the most desirable was always the smaller 280, 6-cylinder version (which at the end of the decade became the 300) so inevitably it was always the rarest and most sought after. Launched in 1985, the 300SL was the ultimate incarnation of the updated R107 and was available for only four years with just 13,443 ever built, making them a rarity in right-hand drive. It was powered by a 2,962cc straight-six engine that produced 185bhp at 5,700rpm and 188lbft of torque at 4,400, sufficient output to endow this open-topped Mercedes with rapid acceleration and a top speed of 130mph.This particular late-production 300SL is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example and, with just one owner from new, this is a real opportunity to own a classic Mercedes convertible from the days when their build quality was legendary. Purchased from Gerard Mann Mercedes of Tamworth, and delivered on the 1st of August 1989 to our vendor's mother on a G plate on 'new plate day', this wonderful example has been cherished for its entire life in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield. Stored in a dry garage, it's supplied with an extensive history file including its original books, all MOTs and Tax Discs over its complete life. Having covered only 26,300 miles in its first 21 years, it was parked up around 12 years ago and has been stored ever since. Our vendors have ensured that the engine was turned over regularly and, having now decided to bring it to the market, they have had it simply serviced and put through an MOT, pleasingly with 'Nil Advisories'. The indicated mileage at the time of consignment was 26,328.The optional hardtop roof has never been off, but it is believed that the soft top underneath is likely unmarked. The interior still appears 'showroom fresh' as do the tool kit and spare wheel. Our vendors have sensibly agreed to have the car sympathetically detailed prior to the sale, just to bring back the lovely finish that you would expect in such a low mileage Mercedes. As has been said many times, a car is only original once, and this SL remains delightfully original. There is slight marking to the edge of the driver's door, a reflection of the access in the garage more than anything, and a small mark on the bumper but we have agreed with our vendor that this is something that any purchaser might choose to attend to or leave as is, given the incredible condition of the rest of the car. So here we have a very low mileage, one owner from new Mercedes-Benz in exceptional condition, with the optional hardtop fitted, and an interior that belies it's 33 years, ready for a new owner to cherish for the next thirty years.   SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 300SLYear: 1989Chassis Number: WDB1070412A103043Registration Number: G621 EOVTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 10398222010809 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 26328 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 464

A beautiful German delivery, European-specification, Pagoda fresh from a 'last nut and bolt' restoration. UK-registered, running and driving without fault and ready for the next chapter.Launched in 1963 to replace the underpowered 190SL and utilising some of the new manufacturing techniques being adopted in the emerging S-Class, the Paul Bracq designed 230SL was proudly unveiled to an appreciative audience at the Geneva Motor Show. Remaining in production until 1971 with around 49,000 finding customers, the W113 Class, frequently referred to as the Pagoda, eventually spanned three engine sizes. The same show in 1967 coincidentally, saw the introduction of the W113-250SL. The new car retained the stiffer suspension and sporty feel of the earlier cars, but provided improved agility with its larger 2.5-litre engine and was now fitted with rear disc brakes and a larger tank. They were offered with a 4-speed Automatic transmission or a 4/5-speed ZF manual gearbox. Replaced by the 280SL in January 1968, its one-year production run makes the 250SL the rarest of the W113 Series. This spectacular 250SL was German supplied and remains in left-hand drive with its original hardtop. It has been subject to a painstaking restoration by M-B marque specialists over the last five years including D-Class, Multitech, SS Motors, Quickfit Safety Belts, SLS in Germany and the SL Shop. The work included a full glass-out respray, brand new leather interior, carpets, hood, engine, running gear and in excess of £36,000 was spent on retrimming, servicing and new parts. These new parts included brand new black Mercedes grained leather throughout including the dash, door cards, seats etc, brand new correct salt and pepper carpets throughout, brand new wood kit incl’ dash and surrounds, a new Mercedes Mohair hood, Mercedes-branded chrome seat-belts, new exhaust, headlights, Michelin Whitewall Tyres 185HR14 MXV, a new Becker Europa Vintage FM Radio with ’67 MB knobs and a Hirschmann Electric Chrome Wing Aerial. The engine rebuild included a reground crank with new mains and big ends, piston rings, rebuilt head with new valves, springs, guides and seats, recon oil pump, new timing chain, recondition fuel injection system and a new clutch and flywheel. At the time of photography, the odometer read 93,121 miles meaning that the car has only covered a handful of miles since the work was completed. The original documents held in the history file include its Service Book, and the stamped Mercedes-Benz Kundendienst alongside acres of invoices from the recent restoration in addition to a UK V5C. The fastidious attention to maintaining originality is clearly illustrated by the period-correct Becker Europa with 1967 MB-knobs, the Hirschmann aerial and proper Michelin tyres. This truly is a superb restoration and, resplendent in its gleaming new Signal Red paintwork, this is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of the rare 250SL on the market today. SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 250SL PAGODAYear: 1967Chassis Number: 11304310000494Registration Number: TBATransmission: AutoEngine Number: 12998012008821Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 93121 MilesMake: LHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 468

The 'Moss Pagoda'. Sir Stirling's own 230SL built for him personally by the factory in 1966.The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL is considered a landmark model that founded a sports car dynasty that would prove an enormous commercial success for the marque. Introduced at the Geneva Salon in March 1963 as replacement for the 190 SL, the 230 SL abandoned its predecessor's four-cylinder engine in favour of a 2.3-litre fuel-injected six derived from that of the 220 SE and producing 150bhp. An instant classic, the body design was entirely new whilst, beneath the skin, the running gear was conventional Mercedes-Benz, featuring all-round independent suspension (by swing axles at the rear), disc front/drum rear brakes, and a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Top speed was more than 193km/h. The 230 SL even managed a debut competition victory, as Sporting Motorist noted: "Performances of the Mercedes-Benz range in the competition field are legendary, and we think particularly of participation in the most rugged of rallies where the cars have proved their strength and stamina beyond doubt. Soon after the 230 SL was announced, Eugen Bohringer drove one to victory in the Spa-Sofia-Liège Rally, and although competition outings are rare, this was the sort of debut one would expect from the Stuttgart factory." Christened 'Pagoda' after their distinctive cabin shape - devised by French automotive designer and classic car enthusiast, Paul Bracq - these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and remain highly sought-after by collectors. The car’s abilities and good looks were not missed by a certain racing driver of the era, a young Stirling Moss, who had, by 1966, established himself as one of the greatest ever drivers to pilot a Mercedes-Benz. In 1954, Moss started to drive for Maserati in Formula 1, but in the same year he was signed by Mercedes-Benz racing manager Alfred Neubauer as a driver for the 1955 season. This was a pivotal moment in his Moss’ career, as he had become a member of what was then the most successful racing team in the world. 1955 was a formidable year for Moss and Mercedes-Benz, he and co-driver Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia, with an average speed of 157.65 km/h. The two Brits therefore set a new record time for the ‘1,000 miles’, which still stands today, their time on this legendary road race has never been beaten and is never likely to be.The second great triumph for Moss in 1955 was his victory at the British Grand Prix on 16th July at Aintree in the Mercedes-Benz W196R. Moss was the first Brit to win this prestigious race and he led a quadruple victory for the ‘Silver Arrows’, followed by his team colleagues Juan Manuel Fangio, Karl Kling, and Piero Taruffi. In the Spring of 1966, Stirling was thinking about a new road car and the Pagoda was top of the list. According to the book ‘Mercedes W113: The Complete Story’, Moss had been so impressed with the W113 that he personally wrote a letter to his former race chief, Alfred Neubauer, saying: "In all the years I have been driving, I cannot remember ever driving a car that I would have liked to own more (except for racing cars!)"Again, from the same book, Moss was extremely keen to get hold of an early, more powerful 250 SL, but the factory had only begun producing LHD examples for the US-market. Supposedly, those with enough ‘clout’ could convince Mercedes-Benz to do a ‘special order’ of models not yet in wider production. Furthermore, Moss personally requested (and apparently insisted on) that his car should also come with another exclusive feature, this being that the car’s hardtop should have a distinctive opening roof vent; we understand this to be an unique feature, to honour Moss’ exacting wishes; the flap and hinges were specially engineered by Mercedes-Benz for this Pagoda to the same standard/spec as found on the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ and this vent is believed to be unique on any Pagoda.Mercedes-Benz accommodated the wishes of their Grand Prix and Mille Miglia winner, choosing to give him the UK-spec car displayed at the 1966 Earls Court Motor Show, but specially fitted by the factory with the bigger M129 engine from the 250 SE (the 250 SL was introduced as a RHD model in early 1967) and the roof vent. Interestingly, the data-card for Moss’ Pagoda shows the rare reference ‘Code 992 - engine must be specially selected on the Dynotech for best maximum performance’ – very fitting for such a recipient!Loyal to the brand, and no doubt with a PR opportunity in mind, Moss and Mercedes-Benz arranged for the car’s collection from the factory, the moment captured in a famous historic photograph (see image attached), which was published with the caption “Former racing driver Stirling Moss, 36, being ‘flagged away’ by his old chief, Alfred Neubauer, 75, when he visited Stuttgart, Germany, to pick up his new Mercedes-Benz 230 SL sports car. In the passenger seat is Stirling's wife Elaine"Moss’ affection for his brand-new Pagoda was evident, as he assigned his very distinctive registration number, 'M7', to it (7 being his lucky number). Accompanying paperwork in the car’s history file confirms this, showing it was registered with Greater London Council, and benefiting from a service in Mayfair (where Moss lived) at 11,136 miles. Moss thoroughly enjoyed the car and can be seen in the driver’s seat of it captured in another period photograph (see image attached), we believe in attendance at Silverstone with his friend Rob Walker.Moss’ association with the ‘Pagoda’ model was also used in a commercial context, with him stood next to a similar LHD car (made to look like his actual car bearing the ‘M7’ registration number) in numerous advertisements for ‘J Wax’, with one using the strapline ‘Stirling Moss tells how to keep your car looking new – like his’The car presented here is Sir Stirling Moss’ 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W113) ‘Pagoda’, accompanied by a copy of its original factory special order form which is made out to ‘Stirling Moss of London, England’, a copy of its data-card, its original service booklet, handbooks, and historic registration documents – with numerous references to Moss being the first owner and confirming the car’s special features and fascinating provenance. Remarkably, the car also has a fully documented history of ownership, servicing, and mileage up to the present day - there are green logbooks, receipts, MOT Certificates, Bills of Sale and associated paperwork going right back to 1966!Following Moss’ ownership, in 1968, the car was bought by a Mr Mitchell, and wore the registration number ‘0017’. Again, the car’s history file documents servicing between 1968 and 1974 (14,336 - 49,700 miles), in Brentford, Chelmsford and Chingford. In November 1970, there is an invoice for the car being repainted in Jaguar Pearl Grey (the colour it still wears today). In October 1974, according to a purchase receipt, it was sold via Hurst Park Automobiles of Surrey to a Mr McBride (who part-exchanged his Ford Granada Estate as part of the deal). Mr McBride subsequently took the car to Northern Ireland and had the registration ‘BO13’ assigned to it. He routinely (between 1974 and 1976, and 49,700 - 72,728 miles) had it serviced Click here for more details and images

Smartly finished in Obsidian Black, this SL55 was part of a notable collection and comes with a superb history file.First registered in the UK on the 24th September 2002, but built as a 2003 model-year vehicle, this exceptional example of the glorious SL55 AMG is finished in Obsidian Black with an Exclusive Red leather interior. Built in right hand drive, the car was specified from new with optional extras including a Parktronic sensor system, Bi-xenon headlamps, multi-contour seats, electric folding mirrors, AMG styling package with 18-inch wheels, premium audio system with CD changer, and an anti-theft alarm. The SL55 retains a succession of servicing invoices from certified Mercedes-Benz workshops dating from 2006 to 2015 that include Mercedes-Benz of Chelsea, Mercedes-Benz of Eastbourne and respected marque specialists Stevensons. Invoices held on file show the car has received proper maintenance throughout its life, which is evidenced by the excellent overall condition. Such is the quality, that in 2015 it was acquired by Norwegian shipping magnate Andreas Ugland and subsequently exported to the Cayman Islands, where it was featured within his eye watering car collection, housed at the Cayman Motor Museum in West Bay, Cayman Islands. In 2021, the Mercedes was repatriated to the UK following the passing of Mr Ugland in 2020 and was imported with all appropriate UK taxes and import duties paid and re-assigned the original UK registration it wears today. Most recently, in December 2021, the SL benefitted from further expenditure with marque specialists Stevensons which included an 'A-service', replacement engine oil and filter, replaced brake fluid and updated SBC, replaced boot struts, replaced PSE pump, replaced hydraulic roof ram and oil and re-gassed air conditioning. The vendor states that whilst the car was in the care of Stevensons, they commented that this example is the best they have seen for many years and has clearly been loved and cherished. The odometer read just under 58,400 miles at the time of cataloguing and this SL55 AMG is offered with an Owners Manual, service book, UK V5C registration document, sundry service invoice, two sets of keys.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: SL55 AMG R230Year: 2002Chassis Number: WDB2304742F030608Registration Number: PF52 XYBTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 11399260004085Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 58400 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Exclusive Red LeatherClick here for more details and images

Supplied new to Germany and shipped to the UK by our vendor in 2012 who stabled it alongside his other Evo II.Thirty-two years ago, the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II thrilled professionals and the general public alike when it was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show. Legend has it that the limited run of 502 cars were all sold pre-launch, possibly squirrelled away by international car collectors. The long-standing rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz was carried over into motor racing and helped to hone some of the greatest Touring Cars of the era. The Evo II was set the unenviable task of beating one of the most successful racing saloons of all time, the BMW E30 M3. A compromise was out of the question and the Mercedes Touring Car, developed for Group A racing using this sports saloon as a basis, went on to acquire legendary status in a number of national championships. Mercedes-Benz took the first three places in the DTM championship in the 1992 season with this vehicle, which was referred to succinctly as the Evo II.The engine's output had been raised once again in comparison to the first Evolution model from the previous year, and was now generating 235 horsepower. Top speed was 250km/h, and the Evo II accelerated from a standing start to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds. The body had also undergone further refinement on an aesthetic and aerodynamic level and the car's sporting pedigree was emphasised by its muscular stance. The Evo II's bodykit is perhaps the most outrageous ever applied to a production car and the fact it was a product of the ultra-conservative world of early-nineties Mercedes-Benz is even more incredible. Its ostentatious, fully adjustable, rear spoiler was aerodynamically perfect and the front splitter would make a decent job of cutting the grass. However, despite outward appearances, the Evo II is seriously comfortable and totally tractable in daily use.The car we are offering today is number 322 of 500 in 'Blauschwarz', a striking combination of blue-black metallic paint. The interior remains largely identical to a highly specified 190 E of the period, however, Black Anthracite leather, wood trim and a couple of discreet touches show how special this car is. All Evo IIs had their production numbers on the dog-leg gear stick and fortunately, considering the proximity of the front spoiler to the tarmac, the full SLS suspension allows the ride height to be adjusted from an interior switch. The options ordered when new included, air conditioning, a fire extinguisher, rear mounted loudspeakers and heated front seats, luxuries of which a Ferrari Scuderia driver could only dream. It is an honour for Silverstone Auctions to sell our vendor’s second Evo II, reluctantly leaving his Mercedes-Benz collection. We sold the vendor’s first Evo II at the Silverstone Classic in 2015. Supplied by Mercedes-Benz AG of Dusseldorf 11th June 1990 the car is presented to auction with an odometer reading of 88,767km or 55,157 miles. Appropriately serviced when in regular use by its three previous German owners, the service book shows ten stamps, and the last stamp was on 9th October 2012 at 88,598km, just prior to our vendor’s purchase and shipment to the UK where it has not been registered and driven up to temperature on private roads for the last ten years. The car will receive a fluids service prior to auction in our vendor’s private workshop. The car is presented to auction with wallet that includes the service book, copy German title documents, receipts and "Evo II" show plates.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 190 E 2.5-16 EVOLUTION IIYear: 1990Chassis Number: WDB2010361F740409Registration Number: WDB2010361F740409Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 10299210000426Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 88767 KMMake: Only LHDInterior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

Smartly presented in classic colours with an odometer reading of 60,496 miles that is supported by the original service book. The 250SL Pagoda W113 was already in production by the time it was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show, and discontinued by January 1968. The short one-year production run before being replaced by the 280SL in January 1968, makes the 250SL the rarest of the W113 series cars. The new car retained the stiffer suspension and sportier feel of the early SLs, but provided improved agility with a new engine and rear disc brakes. Range also improved with an increased fuel tank capacity from 65 to 82-litres. The 250 SL was offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission or 4-speed or ZF 5-speed manual transmissions. The preceeding model, the 190 SL, had been a huge hit in the Untied States, a pretty and nimble alternative to the bloated turn-pike cruisers so it's no surprise that over 90% of Pagodas were built in left-hand drive and destined for America, as was this 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL on August 4th 1967. Incredibly, the car’s original service book survives, we cannot stress enough the rarity of this, and notes that the car was first registered in Chicago, and first serviced by Knauz Continental Autos Inc., of Illinois at 867 miles on 28th November 1967. There are a further thirteen service entries culminating in a final visit in 1976 at 51,906 miles, and presumably was off the road during the next three decades, was subsequently restored and next serviced in July 2012 at 58,125 miles. The car was imported into the United Kingdom and registered on 13th August 2012 with the DVLA, to the first UK owner who enjoyed the little Pagoda for six years before our vendor purchased it. A long time client of Silverstone Auctions, he had the intention of using it for a Continental tour before COVID restrictions came into place a year later. It's now presented to auction recently serviced, MOT'd and benefitting from fuel system works at a cost of £3,000 and the valve stem oil seals were also replaced. The history file is lovely and contains the aforementioned original service book, associated paperwork, V5C and recent MOT Certificate.SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 250SLYear: 1967Chassis Number: 11304312001287Registration Number: XBL 434ETransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: M129000641 Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 60496 MilesMake: LHDInterior Colour: RedClick here for more details and images

Bought directly by our vendor from the first owner in 1998, subject to a long-term restoration and just one of 562 right-hand drive examples. The 1955 launch of the 190 SL cemented Mercedes-Benz's reputation as the car manufacturer for those who wanted elegance, build quality and a good turn of speed. Unsurprisingly, most of the 26,000 units were sold to the North American market and, it's believed, just some 562 were made in right-hand drive. Although stunningly pretty, the 190 SL had stiff competition in the UK from domestic sports car manufacturers such as Jaguar, Austin-Healey and the significantly cheaper models from MG. Consequently, a UK-supplied 190 SL is perhaps the rarest of all sports cars from that era, especially compared to the huge amount of cars sold to countries who drive on the other side of the road. Some would say that a car’s history is as important as its condition, and whilst restorations can be paid for, it is the story that elevates a car from lovely to interesting. We now have the pleasure of telling this car’s story which began when it was first registered, appropriately enough on New Years Day 1961, to the first owner, a Mr Beach of Twickenham. Supplied in red with a black interior, the car was issued with the registration number 56 HYL and we are pleased to say that the car still bears that registration today, and will do for the next owner. The accompanying buff continuation logbook, stamped 25th May 1972, is signed by Mr Beach and notes the car’s colour, chassis and engine numbers. One day in 1998, our lady vendor was strolling past Mr Beach’s house and noticed the 190 SL in the open garage. Lengthy negotiations were started and the car was finally purchased from its first owner by our vendor. It appears that it had not run for many years and the subsequent restoration was a labour of love that took over twenty-years, which our vendor concedes was to a good, usable standard, rather than to Concours-winning condition. The colour was changed to silver, the interior retrimmed in red leather and topped by a black soft top hood with the original interior fittings retained where possible.Very rarely does a 61 old car come to market with just two owners from new, and few have the original owner’s details listed in a buff logbook. The odometer reading of 53,498 miles, at the time of cataloguing, is believed genuine, in keeping with the car’s decades away from the road. Sensibly guided, it's presented to auction with the current V5C showing just one former keeper, the aforementioned buff continuation logbook, a fresh MOT Certificate and the distinction of being a 190 SL with the lowest ownership history offered to market in some time. SpecificationMake: MERCEDES-BENZModel: 190 SLYear: 1961Chassis Number: 12104220019189Registration Number: 56 HYLTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 121-92120019245 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 53498 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Red LeatherClick here for more details and images
