Rolex. A fine and rare stainless steel automatic wristwatch with gilt 4 line dial and big crownModel: Submariner '4 Line'Reference: 6538Date: Circa 1956Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions and temperatures, No.N69****Dial: Black gilt, 4 line, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, inside back date coded III.56, screw down big crown, No.158***Strap/Bracelet: Brown crocodile Buckle/Clasp: Associated steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 37mmFootnotes:The Rolex Submariner 6538 was supplied for just four years but it has become one of the best known and sought after of the Submariner models. Its general defining features are the over size (8mm) crown, lack of protective crown guards and gilt dial. The gilt dial comes with gilt hands which are unusual for a stainless steel case but typical for this date. These features mean that it is instantly recognisable and since it became the adopted watch of the James Bond film character played by Sean Connery, rather famous too.One defining feature of this particular watch is that is has a chronometer rating, indicated by the four line description above 6. Printed are meters first depth indication, Submariner in a different tone to the other writing and Official Certified Chronometer split over two lines. The calibre 1030 movement was available in both normal and Chronometer versions for this reference and this is the rarer of the two. The watch therefore would have had extra scrutiny and adjustment to get it through the rigorous test to gain a chronometer certificate. It is a rare sub-category of the reference 6538. The present owners father bought this watch second hand in 1970 for £20 as he could not afford a new watch for diving. Little did he realise he was buying into the Submariner legacy and has become one of the touch points for collectors the world over. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

As the diving development continued, Rolex continued to collaborate and test their watches with the use of professional divers as well as using Submariners. Each watch issued to their specialist divers was marked Comex on the dial and numbered on the back. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. A rare stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watchModel: Double Red Sea DwellerReference: 1665Date: Circa 1972Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1570 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.D03****Dial: Black MKII, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, white outer minute divisions, date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, inside back stamped I.72, calibrated bezel, No.307****Strap/Bracelet: Brushed and polished Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 40mm Accompaniments: Rolex box, outer card, service receipts, service pouch, brochureFootnotes:The 'Double-Red' Sea-Dweller reference 1665 appeared in the Rolex catalogue from 1973 until 1975. The nickname refers to the two red printed lines on the dial. The 'Sea-Dweller 2000' was one of the first production watches to employ a gas-escape valve on the band of the case, which allows the interior of a watch to decompress and avoids damage. The one way valve automatically releases built up gas from inside the case when the diver rises from the deep sea environment without which the watch would be in danger of popping the seals. Interestingly, the plexi glass covering the dial did not feature the usual cyclops magnifying the date window as it adds a pressure point which would cause a weakness. The dial variations for the Double-Red Sea-Dweller are named Mark I to Mark IV among collectors and are distinguished by small variations in the style of the red writing. The present watch has a Mark II dial. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 4

Rolex. A stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watch with dual time zoneModel: GMT Master 'Pepsi'Reference: 16700Date: Circa 1988Movement: 31-jewel Cal.3175 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.545****Dial: Black, luminous filled dot hour markers, baton quarters, white outer minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and crown, blue and red 'Pepsi' bezel insert, No.R75****Strap/Bracelet: Fitted 78360 Oyster link Buckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped RS11Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 40mmFootnotes:The GMT Master Ref:16700 which succeeded Ref:16750 was in production from approximately 1988 to 1999 alongside the GMT Master II Ref:16710. At the time, the 16700 was slightly more affordable than its GMT Master II counterpart but far fewer of this reference were produced as such the 16700 is a rarer watch to have in any collection. The 16700 also housed the new calibre 3175, an upgrade on the calibre 3075.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 43

Rolex. A stainless steel automatic bracelet watch with gilt dialModel: SubmarinerReference: 5513Date: Circa 1966Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1520 automatic Dial: Black, 200m=660ft, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, inside back date coded I.66, calibrated bezel, No.141****Strap/Bracelet: Fitted rivet Oyster link Buckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped 4 66Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 39.5mmFootnotes:Rolex introduced to the market reference 5513 in 1962, and produced the reference until the mid-1980's. The model is recognizable by its lack of date feature, allowing the dial to have a well-balanced design. Early examples of the 5513 featured a glossy black dial with gilt text, and in the mid-1960's, Rolex started producing the reference with a matte dial and white printing. These dials featured the depth rating with meters indicated first '200m=660ft', and towards the end of the 1960's, Rolex began producing dials with the depth rating that indicated feet first. The matte dial reference 5513 appeals to vintage Rolex enthusiasts for its dial symmetry, durability, and place in Rolex history as inspiration for future Submariner models. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 44

Rolex. A fine stainless steel automatic bracelet watch with gilt dialModel: SubmarinerReference: 6536/1Date: Circa 1956Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions and temperatures, No.N73****Dial: Black, 200m = 330ft, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and crown, inside back date coded III.57, black calibrated bezel with red arrow, No.306***Strap/Bracelet: Fitted rivet Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped 3 63Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 37mmFootnotes:The Ref.6536 was produced by Rolex for 4 years at the end of the 1950's. It is defined by its gloss black dial with gilt signature and minute track, echoed in colour by the gilt hands. The bezel changed over time and this has the rare early version with no individual minute calibration. The 6mm crown has no crown guards at this period giving it the distinct silhouette of the early submariners. The exceptional preservation of the watch and especially of the case which retains its original tapered bevelled edge makes this a very rare example of this reference. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 46

Rolex. A stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watch with dual time zone and gilt dialModel: GMT MasterReference: 1675Date: Circa 1964Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1560 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperatures, No.D80***Dial: Black, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, inside back stamped IV.64, faded blue and red 'pepsi' bezel insert, No.102****Strap/Bracelet: Fitted Jubilee linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed USA folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 40mm Accompaniments: Rolex boxFootnotes:The Rolex GMT was launched in 1954 after the Transatlantic Airways company asked Rolex to produce a watch useful for their pilots. It quickly gained favour among the Pan-Am executives and the business jet-set community as a whole.Offered continuously since its introduction with relatively little modification it is perhaps, along with the Submariner, the most classic Rolex 'tool' watch made. The reference 1675 began production 80 years ago in 1960. This was the first GMT Master reference to feature protective crown guards as well as the smaller triangular tip on the second hour hand. The current example features a highly attractive gilt dial. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 49

Rolex. A fine stainless steel automatic calendar dual time wristwatch with bakelite bezelModel: GMT MasterReference: 6542Date: Circa 1959Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperature, No.N80****Dial: Tropicalised black gilt, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, outer gilt minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre seconds, arrow tipped red dual time zone handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, inside back stamped IV.1958, blue and red 'Pepsi' bakelite bezel, No.426***Strap/Bracelet: Fitted folded rivet sprung 6635 Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 38mm Accompaniments: Spare 62523H Oyster link bracelet Footnotes:The model 6542 was manufactured from 1954 until 1959 and is distinguishable from its replacements by the lack of guards to protect the crown. Originally designed to enable PanAm pilots to see two different time-zones at a glance, the Rolex GMT soon became favoured among business travellers in general. This reference found further fame around 5 years after Rolex finished production; this time on the wrist of Honour Blackmans Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. The early models are immediately recognisable by their bright bakelite bezels as with the current example. The delicate nature of bakelite and the radium radioactivity of the luminous numbering meant many were replaced during their lifetime leaving those in original condition very rare. This rarity is further defined by the short production period of the reference as a whole. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. A stainless steel automatic calendar bracelet watch with 'flat 4' bezel insertModel: Submariner 'Kermit Flat 4'Reference: 16610 TDate: Circa 2003Movement: 31-jewel Cal.3135 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions and temperatures, No.770***Dial: Black, luminous filled dot hour markers, baton quarters, white outer minute divisions, magnified date aperture at 3, polished Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and shouldered crown, green calibrated bezel insert with 'flat 4', No.Y96****Strap/Bracelet: Brushed 93250 Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped AD7Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 40mmFootnotes:Rolex released a special edition Submariner in 2003 with a green bezel and black dial to commemorate the models 50th anniversary. Bringing to mind Jim Hensons lovable creation, the model has gone on to earn itself the nickname 'Kermit'.Early Kermits are recognisable by their 'Flat 4' bezels. This refers to the execution of the 40 on the green insert whereby the 4 has a flat top in comparison with 4s that can be found on later iterations which have a pointed top to the 4.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
