A George III gilt brass pocket watch movement Thomason Fitter, London, late 18th century The gilt full plate single fusee movement with, four column-turned pillars pinned through the backplate, scroll-pierced stop-iron block and five-spoke wheel crossings, the current English lever escapement with sprung three-arm balance and Tompion type regulation, the backplate with fine asymmetric foliate scroll pierced balance cock fitted with screwed diamond endstone and with engraved wedge-shaped foot flanked by silvered regulation disc with adjacent applied gilt infill opposing signature Tho'on Fitter, London and serial number 5871 , with white enamel Roman numeral dial (hands lacking) and original gilt dust cover with repeat signature, the pillar plate 33mm (1.3125ins) diameter. Thomason Fitter is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1731-83. The English lever escapement fitted to the current lot is unlikely to be original as this would appear make it a particularly early example. It is therefore most probable that the current lever escapement is a 19th century conversion from cylinder or perhaps duplex. The movement however is generally very well made (with five-spoke wheel crossings) and there are no obvious signs of alteration (although the escapewheel appears to be a replacement) hence would probably warrant disassembly to allow further investigation.
A fine French Louis XVI gilt brass quarter-repeating verge pocket watch movement Charles Le Roy, Paris, late 18th century The gilt full-plate single fusee four column-turned pillar movement with verge escapement, three-arm steel balance and quarter-repeat mechanism with two hammers for denoting the hours and quarters positioned between the plates activated by a plunger at twelve o'clock, the backplate with delicate rococo scroll pierced and chased balance bridge, silvered regulation disc and signed Charles LeRoy, A PARIS, No. 2145 to circumference, the white enamel Roman numeral dial with repeat signature to centre and puce Arabic five minutes to outer track (lacking hands), the pillar plate 37mm (1.5ins approx.) diameter. Charles Le Roy was born in 1709 and became Maitre in 1733, he initially worked from rue des Prescheurs but by 1745 he had moved to rue St. Denis. Le Roy took in his son, Etienne-Augustin, as partner in around 1758. The firm's clocks and watches were however still signed 'Charles Le Roy' (even after the death of Charles in 1771) until the business was sold to Gaspard Cachard in 1792. The firm were appointed Horloger du Roi to Louis XVI and became particularly well known for the quality of their movements and collaborations with leading ebenistes and bronziers to create the finest and most fashionable timepieces for their Aristocratic clients.
