The below all covered in turquoise enamel but for the central square within which is an apocryphal cobalt blue six character seal / zhuanshu mark of the Emperor Qianlong. H: 33 cm Notes: 1. The story of The Eight Horses of King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty originates from a historical romance, The “Mu Tianzi Zhuan”(lit. “An Account of Emperor Mu”), which describes the journeys of the fifth emperor of the Zhou dynasty (1023-983 BC) during which he met Xi Wangmu, i.e. the Queen Mother of the West. 2. II, pl.316, no.792.The later frame describes the sitters as Sir Belford Hinton Wilson KCB (1804-1858) and his wife Catherine (née Randolph). Sir Belford Hinton Wilson, friend and supporter of the Peruvian liberator Simón Bolívar was not born until 1804 (making him an impossible candidate for a portrait dated 1790), it would appear that the later frame refers to a different miniature.Condition report: Condition appears fine - really lovely hairwork and frame.

The hair verso has areas of dark sticky glue. Old sticky labels verso.

With travelling box.* Biography Couaillet Frères were one of the most prolific of the carriage clock makers at this period with workshops in the horological town of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont near Dieppe. In 1885 Armand Couaillet was employed by the prominent maker Albert Villon, but in 1892 he and his brothers Denis and Ernest set up their own workshops in the centre of the town as Couaillet frères. Delépine-Barrois, an engraved carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with push button repeat sounding the last hour at will, the backplate stamped with the hand setting arrow as used by the Delépine family and numbered 829, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and with an engraved gilded surround, the engraved Gorge case with swing handle, height 15cms handle up, 13cms handle down.* Biography Delépine-Barrois were a partnership between Ludovic Delépine and his wife Marie Barrois, the step-daughter to the horologist Sauteur of Paris and Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, the horological town where Marie met and married Ludovic Delépine in 1884. The Delépine-Barrois business became one of the finest carriage clock producers of the late-Victorian period before selling the large house and workshops to Couaillet in 1914.
