After scoring 73 goals in 112 2nd Division games he was sold on to Manchester United for £6,500 in February 1938. He helped the Red Devils to win promotion in 1937-38, but then the outbreak of war in Europe robbed him of seven full seasons of First Division football.

They had only progressed to one final in 1978 which ended in defeat to Forest. So the win over West Ham in 1981 was something of a seminal victory and one that opened the floodgates. Liverpool recorded a hat-trick of League Cup wins by retaining the trophy in 1982 and 1983, and the club has now won the competition eight times in all, a tally more than any other team.
