A French ormolu-mounted, brown tortoiseshell, ebony and Boulle barometre à pyramideIn the Louis XIV style, after a model by André-Charles Boulle, second half 19th centurySurmounted by the arms of France, with stepped pediment above tapering trunk centred with an oval medallion of a lady, above a foliate mask cast frame to the enamel dial inscribed 'CICERI Selon TORICELLI' to the centre and with three other plaques 'PLUVIEUX' / 'CHANGEANT' / 'BEAU TEMPS', with waisted stem on integral rectangular plinth, with bracket-shaped base and berried terminal, the reverse with a printed paper label detailing a similar barometer, inscribed in ink with reference to a sale at Christie's in 1893114cm. high. IllustratedThe original model from the workshop of André-Charles Boulle and his sons is after a design by Jean Bérain and Gilles-Marie Oppenordt.The reference to the 1893 sale on the paper label on the reverse is most likely that of a similar, though smaller, one bought shortly after the French Revolution by George Capel-Conigsby, 5th Earl of Essex (d. 1839) and sold at Christie's in 1893. IllustratedPierre and Alfred Drocourt had a Paris-based business with a manufactory at Saint Nicolas d'Aliermont. Successive medal winners at the International Exhibitions during the second half of the nineteenth century, their carriage clocks are always of the best quality.
