1840 1d plate 4: BE three very small to large margins showing portion of adjoining stamp at left but slightly cut into at top, used on piece with light indistinct red MC and additionally tied by bold Upton C Penny Post cancel in black (Spec AS23ya), vertical crease through stamp but a rare combination, cat £2,000
London Local Post: Small collection of sixteen entires and one piece each with 1840 1d black cancelled by black MC, arranged and indentified on pages by vendor to illustrate the early trials of the experimental black MC cancel, most of the adhesives with two or three margins, most entires with local receiving house handstamp and all with chief office date stamp, dates range from to 31 Aug 1840 to 27 Jan 1841, a very useful accumulation
Combination Cancel: 1841 1d red-brown plate 31 lettered IE, four good to large margins used on folded cover to Exeter, cancelled by black MC cancel as well as Slough cds for NO 16 1843, front also bears Hounslow transit cds for NO 16, boxed T.P. Hanwell W.O. receiving house handstamp and red manuscript marking, reverse bears Kensington Penny Post handstamp and Exeter receiving cds, a few faults to reverse incl torn backflap, nevertheless a neat and attractive cover
1844-45 1d red-brown plate 45 tied to entire by Hawkshead Penny Post in blue (Spec BS26Hwb var), two good to large margins, cut into at left and right, addressed locally and dated 7 January 1845, horizontal fold to entire does not detract from this very rare cancellation, rated C (x 5 on cover) by Danzig and Goldsmith, cat £4,250+
Book post: c1860 wrapper with embossed 'per Book Post Knight & Co. 90 Fleet Street' in red at top left, addressed to Kirbly and franked with 1858-79 1d rose red, tied by bold London 'D34' numeral, light vert fold but much above average, a rare example of this difficult Inland branch numeral believed to have been used for bulk mail, Parmenter rarity 'H'.
