An unusual weight-driven gallery/turret clock movement of two month duration. Bartley & Eggert, Temple Cloud, circa 1815 The substantial six pillar movement with 9.5 x 6.5 inch plates, deadbeat escapement and twin barrels winding from the rear with both greatwheels driving the five-wheel going train, the foliate engraved backplate signed Bartley & Eggert, TEMPLE CLOUD between the winding squares and with cut-out to lower edge, the front with extended feet and take-off for the arched cast iron falseplate fitted with motionwork, with a large diameter pendulum bob but no rod or weights. The partnership between Mark Bartley and D. Eggert is recorded in Moore, A.J. THE CLOCKMAKERS OF BRISTOL 1650-1900 as operating from 2 Nicholas Street 1810-14. The partnership was apparently dissolved in 1814 with Eggert moving to Temple Cloud, he is later (after 1818) thought to have emigrated to New York. Moore, in his sister publication THE CLOCKMAKERS OF SOMERSET 1650-1900 notes the current lot and suggests that it is evidence for the partnership continuing for a short period after Eggert had moved to Temple Cloud before being dissolved. By repute the current lot was removed from Ston Easton House (three miles south of Temple Cloud) prior to the post 1960’s restoration of the building.

327-339. DAVID CARR (1915-1968) The painter and collector, David Carr, has been described as ‘a lost genius in the canon of Post-War British Artists, a pioneering creator who succeeded in his quest to paint man’s epic struggle for individual identity’. He was born to a wealthy family in London in 1915 who owned the biscuit manufacturing business of the same name. He was educated at Uppingham and began his working career at the family firm where his father was chairman, but he hated the commercial world and left to read History at Oxford. In the 1950s, Carr began a remarkable series of works depicting man’s relationship with machines and industrial production, exploring the blurred line between the repetitive movements of working men and the machines they tended. These visionary works, in a Post-Cubist style, are Carr’s lasting legacy and convey his idiosyncratic view of mid-20th Century Britain. In 1968, the Bertha Shayer Gallery in New York staged an exhibition of his paintings, but it was not until 1987, nineteen years after Carr’s premature death from cancer, that he came to real prominence in London. This was when the Mayor Gallery held a retrospective of the work of the man that Bryan Robertson called ‘...of special importance to British Art of this period’. A further retrospective exhibition was held in London in 1997 at the Austin Desmond Gallery. *David Carr (1915-1968), MONOCHROME ABSTRACT FORMS two, 91.5 x 71.5cm, unframed; and an oil on board 75.5 x 58cm, framed (3)
S.C.H `Sammy` Davis (1887-1981) DAVIS DRIVING HIS ALVIS TO VICTORY IN THE 1927 SIX HOUR RACE AT BROOKLANDS Signed l.l., oil on canvas 46 x 51cm and a Letter from Sammy Davis to the vendor concerning the Brooklands painting and discussing painting for him the crash scene from his win at Le Mans in 1927 (2). Sydney Charles Houghton ‘Sammy’ Davis was a British racing driver and journalist. He started his career as an apprentice with the Daimler Company and following WWI he became sports editor at The Autocar. He competed in motor races in the 1920s and became a member of the ‘Bentley Boys’. In 1927, he won both the Six Hour race at Brooklands, and more famously the 24 Hours at Le Mans, despite a crash causing damage to the Bentley early in the race. As vice-president of the Aston Martin Owners Club, in 1935 he designed their ‘wings’ badge and did much to promote British motor racing post WWII. In his later years he moved to Guildford, where he used his skills to train police drivers, as well as writing articles and painting.
