AAMC #2c, Calbraith Rodgers` Vin Fiz Flyer, Compton, Cal. Crash on November 12, 1911, lithographic post card picturing Cal Rodgers and his Vin Fiz Flyer leaving Sheepshead Bay, NY, the address side with the special five-line purple cachet for the flight which was applied to mail intended to be carried on the final leg of the flight from Pasadena to Long Beach, plus a well struck Machine wrecked/at Compton/Aviator Injured three-line purple handstamp, card franked with a 1c Green Franklin tied by a Long Beach, Cal./Nov. 16, 1911/10 AM wavy flag machine cancel, addressed to a Mrs. Olive Douglas of Minneapolis, Minn. from her son mentioning this card as being one of the first mail ever carried in a air ship in the United States and that he was going to see it land, card in better condition than often found, very fine.[cr][lf][cr][lf]The five-line cachet indicates that this card was to travel on the final leg of the journey from Pasadena to Long Beach. However, before he could complete this journey, the Flyer crashed upon takeoff from his stop at Compton, leaving Rodgers seriously injured and with the plane completely wrecked. This is when the three-line handstamp was applied. One month later, Rodgers had recovered just enough to complete the last leg with a totally rebuilt plane. This landed him a position in history books as the first pilot to fly across the entire United States.[cr][lf][cr][lf]This card is believed to be one of seven known from the wreck of the Vin Fiz Flyer at Compton, California. An incredible piece of early aviation history in the United States and wonderful example for the crash cover collector. View Terms & Conditions

The objectives were to destroy the ski resorts railway link with Havgastol and to cause as many casualties amongst the Germans and Norwegian traitors as possible. As part of their briefing, the crews were shown a pre-war travel film which showed the nature and appearance of the target. Three attacks were made on 18th, 20th and 22nd December 1940.
