§ John Minton (1917-1957)Street Scene, Jamaicasigned and dated 'John Minton 1950' (upper left)ink and watercolour36.5 x 27cm Provenance:With The Lefevre Gallery, LondonSale; Sotheby's, London, March 8 1995, lot 137Departing London on September 9, 1950, John Minton and his then partner, Ricky Stride, set sail for Jamaica aboard the SS Bayano. In stark contrast to the grey and oppressive atmosphere of post-war London, Jamaica beckoned with vibrant and exotic allure. In Jamaica, however, Minton found a dichotomy: swaying palms and colonial romanticism juxtaposed against a backdrop of poverty and racial tension. Writing in Vogue, Minton later explained ‘tourists arrive, spend their money and depart. And meanwhile beneath this surface life, the life of the island, the inner conflict of politics, race, wealth, poverty and unemployment made acute by the crumbling of colonial life’.Whilst in the Caribbean, Minton produced a wealth of drawings and paintings which were at once an exotic visual feast and a complex psychological and sociological study. In September 1951, Minton’s Jamaican works were unveiled at the Lefevre Gallery, where they were met with widespread critical acclaim.
