by Joseph Gloster, Birmingham 1905, featuring a scene in repoussé of Salisbury cathedral with a horse and cart in the foreground and a border of foliate decoration, monogrammed cartouche bottom left, with hinged cover, verso the same scene, 1.9ozt (Dimensions: w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)(w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)Footnote: Other notes: Along with the famous silversmith, Nathanial Mills, Joseph Gloster contributed to the popularity of the so-called 'castle-top' silver visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists. He was a prolific Birmingham box maker at the time. These cases appealed to a public fascinated by novelty and became - and still are - highly collectable. Most castle top silver is made by die stamping (pushing the metal out from behind, using a stamp). Some scenes are quite common, such as Windsor Castle - however, the rarer the scene, the more valuable the item. The record for a castle top card case stands at £9,800, which was for a very rare example of The Post Office, Dublin.
SWAROVSKI; four glass animals, to include four fish on chrome stand, also two champagne flutes and two wine glasses (part af).Additional InformationWe are unable to post this lot as they are very fragile. We would recommend using Mailboxes Etc. All the items in the description are what is shown in the photograph. One of the tails of the three fish has come off. The loose fish is completely at fault, both fins are off, another piece has further damage and crude repairs including 'blu-tac' with more chips. More blu-tac pieces to the fish including to the end of the sculpture where the clear crystal has been applied with blu-tac to the chromed frame. The two parrots possibly have some small chips/nibbles to the ends of the tails as they have a very sharp finish. One of the wine glasses has a very small chip/nibble to the rim, otherwise light general wear and dirt. They do not have boxes or certificates.

Dumas (Alexandre). The Count of Monte Christo, 3 volumes, Belfast: Simms and McIntyre, 1846, [2] 400, [2] 5-448, [2] 5-464, signatures [pi]2 A-2B8 (2B8=blank?), A7 B-2E8, A7 B-2F8, without engraved series-title and letterpress half-title to each volume (see Sadleir) and preface leaf to volume 1, light staining to volume 1 pp. 3-5, volume 3 pp. 446-7 sometime stuck together and now separated obscuring a few letters, a few other trivial marks, contemporary ownership inscriptions 'Mrs Wm Bowie' and 'Douglas S Brown' to front free endpapers, contemporary half calf, rubbed overall, spines worn with loss to ends, joints cracked, volume 1 front board near detached (just held by top cord), 8vo (16.3 x 9.6 cm) (Qty: 3)NOTESSadleir 3754. The first volume is the first edition in English of any part of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo; Sadleir concluded that the second and third volumes 'in all likelihood post-dated the Chapman & Hall edition [but the first volume] pre -dated it by two or three months'. Rare: OCLC traces seven copies for the first volume, and four sets of the second and third. The three volumes were all issued as part of Simms and McIntyre's Parlour Novelist series, a 'revolution in cheap-novel publishing' (Sadleir). The first appeared in April 1846 with the title-page reading 'Chateau d'If. A Romance ... translated from the French by Emma Hardy', with volumes two and three following in September and October, with title-pages reading 'The Count of Monte Christo ... In Two Volumes, being a Sequel to "The Chateau d'If"'. This set appears to contain uniform cancel title-pages which are otherwise unrecorded; volume one retains the caption-title 'The Chateau d'If' on page 1 and colophon 'End of the Chateau d'If'; volume two retains the colophon 'End of volume the first'. It is evidently not an example of the 1848 re-issue under the Parlour Library series, which is easily distinguishable by its pagination (319, 320, 363 pp.).
