Sarah Villeneau, "Torso 1", ceramic and metal sculpture, 2018, 28 x 29 x 21cm, 3.6kg. Working intuitively with the clay Villeneau creates objects that appear alive, as if they might suddenly move, scuttle off. This is achieved through through guiding without completely controlling the clay, allowing unexpected quirks and folds to be captured. Informed by the physiology of the body, this piece permits a glimpse of the vulnerable fleshy interior whilst wrapping itself in a protective ceramic cloak. A quiet piece, the colours and textures are highly organic, whilst the added metal bolts ground it, giving it a sense of determination and strength. Created in response to the centenary of Women’s Suffrage, the piece references the voice box and celebrates the determination of women to be heard. Decorated with oxides, volcanic engobe and multiple glazes, the piece is fired to stoneware in an electric kiln and the bolts added post-firing. Located in Sheffield, UK delivery £40.
Sarah Villeneau, "Torso 3", ceramic and metal sculpture, 2018, 31 x 35 x 18cm, 4.6kg. Working intuitively with the clay Villeneau creates objects that appear alive, as if they might suddenly move, scuttle off, although this piece also looks determined to stand its ground. This is achieved through guiding without completely controlling the clay, allowing unexpected quirks and folds to be captured. Informed by the physiology of the body, this piece flaunts its vulnerable interior, standing defiant on a nut and two bolts. Full of texture and earthy colours, the piece is connected to the earth as well as the body, stating its place in the world. The metal tacks fired into the ceramic testify to a life lived, a body that changes over time. Created in response to the centenary of Women’s Suffrage, the piece references the voice box and celebrates the determination of women to be heard. Decorated with oxides, volcanic engobe and multiple glazes, this piece is fired to stoneware in an electric kiln and the nut and bolts added post-firing. Located in Sheffield, UK delivery £40.
