Two 6-pdr iron carronades or gunnades Early 19th century, Each with a plain cascabel with ring surmount, the barrel with four moulded turns, with relief cast crown and number 6, 3ft 9in long, 3.67in bore, on a later stepped wooden carriage built by the late James Close, Trunnions are fitted to these carronades in order to lower their centre of gravity, creating a variant known as a gunnade. Provenance: The James Close Collection of Historic Naval Cannon. The Walker Family of Rotherham gun founders. In 1741 Samuel and Aaron Walker set up their fledgling business re-melting scrap and pig-iron behind their property in Grenoside, near Rotherham. By 1745 the business had expanded to the extent that Samuel was able to resign from his teaching post at the local school, and the following year they relocated the foundry to Masborough on the banks of the River Don. Cast Iron produced by Samuel Walker and Company soon became well-known for its quality and strength which made it perfect for casting cannon. Consequently, assisted by the patronage of Charles Watson-Wentworth (2nd Marquess of Rockingham, twice Prime Minister in 1765 and 1782), Walker and Company were awarded a lucrative contract to supply the Royal Navy with cannon. Cast to standard marine ordnance specifications, Walker and Company guns were test-fired in fields next to the foundry before being incorporated into the Royal Navy ordnance. By the end of the eighteenth century Samuel Walker and Company had become one of the largest iron and steel manufacturers in the country. In the early nineteenth century they supplied castings for several important Civil Engineering projects, including Southwark and Vauxhall bridges; however, shortly after the Peninsular war ended in 1815 the company was wound down as there was no longer such a high demand for iron armament. Lots 1002 to 1004 inclusive were cast by Walker and Company to the Bloomfield pattern incorporating a ring to the cascabel to take a breech rope. This type of gun, in varying calibres, was the mainstay of ordnance in Nelson`s Navy.Provenance: Christie, Manson and Woods, London, 10th May, 1972, lot 58, sold on behalf of the Foudroyant Trust. The James Close Collection of Historic Naval Cannon. Historical Notes: This cannon was amongst those allocated to Nelson`s flagship in the Mediterranean, HMS Foudroyant, considered to be the finest ship afloat at the time. Mounting eighty guns on two decks, including thirty 32-pounders on the lower deck and thirty-two 24-pounders on the main deck, she was launched at Southampton in 1798. During her service career she took part in the capture of Le Genereux and Guillame Tell in 1800 and in 1807 of Marengo and Ben Poule. She returned home in 1812 and remained in harbour service at Devonport until 1891. She was later restored as a museum ship but was wrecked in a gale on Blackpool sands in 1897. Her cannon were recovered from the wreck in 1897 and transferred for ballast to HMS Trincomalee, the ship that replaced her and took her name. In 1972 twenty-six of the cannon were sold to the City of Portsmouth to set up on the City walls. After the Christie, Manson and Woods` sale in May 1972, James Close was approached by the producers of the BBC children`s programme "Blue Peter" as they wanted to televise a feature on the cannon. Subsequently the cannon was taken to the "Blue Peter" studio for a live feature presented by Peter Purves and John Noakes, after which it was delivered to James Close`s home. Provenance: The Estate of the late Dame Miriam Rothschild. Silesia in the South West part of Poland, bordering Saxony to one side and the Austrian Czech territories to the other, was first incorporated into the Polish State in the 10th century, but later broke into independent duchies, coming under increasing German influence. It came under the rule of the Crown of Bohemia, which passed to Austria in 1526. Most of Silesia was conquered by Prussia in 1742. The production of this fine games board dates to the period of Austrian dominance, and it is speculatively suggested that it would have been housed at the Promnitz palace in Zary. Promnitz of Silesia was granted a barony in 1559, the head of the family being advanced to a Count in June 1652. It is worth noting though that coronets of the nobility in both Germany and Austria were not rank specific and indicated only that the arms were those of a noble. The arms on the games box therefore might not post date the advancement to the status of Count. Please note: this is damascened steel and mulberry, not walnut as catalogued.
